Question about partitions!

Was wondering if i could do a partition so i can duel boot windows or ubuntu with out damaging windows ? I'm new to this partition way and hate using a virtual box to use ubuntu.

Dual booting Ubuntu with Windows 7 is hard. Because Ubuntu's boot loader Grub will over right windows's boot loader. It is possible to dual boot Ubuntu and windows 7 but very tricky. But if you want to attempt it here's a good guide Dual-Boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu in Perfect Harmony

A much more easier and completely safe way to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7 is Wubi - Ubuntu Installer for Windows. It installs Ubuntu in windows 7 like any application but when ever you boot up your computer you can chose whether to boot windows or Ubuntu. The only draw back is that it makes you download Ubuntu all over again

Just in case you're also wondering about how to partition (split) a disk without destroying data already on it. (How to create a new linux disk without reinstalling Windows) There are some programs out there that can do so.

Partition Wizard is my favorite partition tool, just search google for "non destructive partition" to find more.

I found dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu EXTREMELY easy. Just use WUBI and no issues at all. Makes uninstalling Ubuntu easy as well

Thanks for all these posts. I installed it using Wubi. So far so good no performance issue's.. Now, i have a question about the length of its performance lasting, since its shared on the same drive as windows. Will a fragmented computer in the future slow down Ubuntu since its in a non partitioned state ?

well there is no reason why it should become fragmented, windows defrag does a very efficient job of doing it in the background

Is wubi only supposed to be used to try it out? Will there be much of a difference from installing it on a partition or does that only apply to the fact that its located on c drive with windows so any restore would wipe it out. Just curious cause i am really liking Ubuntu and don't know weather to partition it or not!

Ubuntu on Wubi would be as fast as Ubuntu on a partition. Wubi is just located on your C Drive.

It is highly unlikely that grub ovverwrites windows bootloader as i never had that problem when i am using windows 7 from 6 months with ubuntu.however windows if installed over ubuntu does the same for sure !!!
Dual boot is easy. i suggest you to use Wubi to install ubuntu.It creates a virtual disk of user specified size in windows partition and install ubuntu on it making nochange to windows machine.See here.But if even then you want to install ubuntu see here, then make a separate /boot partition,/root and swap that will make it to 3 partitions alone ofr ubuntu . so make sure that the partition you are using is logical one or you will land up in hdd conflicts as it is limited to 4 primary partitions only.

Thanks for the Reply i been using it from the Wubi installer. In which i am happy =D. Also, i was a little confused with that tutorial you linked did they make a partition on windows first then repartition it with the Ubuntu Installer ? Im just confused cause some people i read about just make say a 50 gig partition through windows then restart in to boot loader load up the Ubuntu disk and install it onto that single partition.. But, I don't wanna mess up my boot loader as wubi works fine except for its 30 gig limit.
