Question about power supplies.

When the computer is turned off, is the power supply still pulling power from the outlet? Was wondering if i could cut back on my power bill by unplugging it when i'm not home or w/e.

thats an interesting question to answer , some do and some don't mine still draws some power because i can see the mobo led on through the plexiglass side panel when my pc is off , another member with more knowledge of psu's will give the why's and wherefores this is just my observation

The best way to know for sure is to invest in a Kill-A-Watt meter and check it yourself.

Ah good point. Looks like I was wrong.

However, if it does pull power when your computer is off, it's not going to pull much. Unplugging it will probably save you a couple dollars a year. ( I could be wrong again )

yours could be newer, greener model than mine is, TGS, that does not mean you were wrong i would expect the current draw to be milliamps ,not really worth bothering about the savings on that!

With ATX PSUs, unless they are unplugged from the mains, switched off at the mains socket or switched off on the PSU itself (if there is a mains switch on the back adjacent to where the mains lead plugs in - note that not all PSUs have such a switch), then power is still being supplied to the motherboard and certain peripherals if the necessary jumpers are so positioned. This is the Standby power, and it is that which enables systems to be started other than by means of the power switch on the front panel (WOL, Wake on RTC, etc).
