Question about RAM

Hi, I am thinking about buying a new RAM for my laptop. My question is, what type of ram would be the best for my laptop? DDR3?DDR4? and also what speed would be the best? (budget is $ 100)

Right now I have 4 GB ram DDR3 @ 665 Mhz 9-9-9-24 . And I have 3 slots available.

So, which would be the best option.

2 x 4 GB ram

or

1 x 8 GB ram

If I have enough money left I might fill all the 4 slots with 4 GB ram in all the slots.

Why do I need that much ram?
I use Auto CAD a lot and that thing is a memory killer. Right now my windows is using 2.55 GB of ram with nothing running except chrome (1 tab). If I open Auto CAD right now it use all 4 GB RAM and my computer will run very slow.

Also 1 quick question. If I buy a 120 GB SSD, how much GB is available if I use windows 8? because on paper it tells my HDD is 500 GB and in properties it tells 421 GB.

Best is to run the Crucial System Scanner. Then you know what the options are and how much they cost.

I would suggest to get a 240GB SSD. They sell for $89 if you watch the sales at Newegg. A typical 8.1 system should be less than 30GB. However, the OEM junk and many large programs can make that a lot bigger - e.g. 60GB.

You should delete the hiberfile and reduce the pagefile to 2GB. That saves a lot of SSD space- e.g. with an 8GB RAM it saves 14GBs.

I did the crucial system scan and it thinks my computer is Lenovo H415 desktop which is wrong (its Lenovo B570). Also in memory it says 2 slots, but in speecy it says 3 slots available.

You can only use DDR3

Don`t trust a program to tell you how many slots you have, physically check yourself. Most laptops only have 2 slots. A slot or 2 may be under the keyboard.

The manufacturer`s website should tell you the max speed and amount you can use.

A 120/128 GB ssd will be fine, but the bigger you can afford the better.

A 500 GB hard drive is 465 GB according to windows, don`t know where you`re getting 421 from.

Disk Management will show you the entire drive.

Yea its 465, I forgot that I had 2 partition.

I found a 250 GB SSD for $139.99. Write speed is 470 Mbp/s and read speed is 570 Mbp/s.

Thaty SSD is too expensive and Transcend is an unknown make in SSDs. I just bought a 240GB Crucial for $89. Check the sales at Newegg and Amazon. Here is a little selection.

And don't focus on data transfer times. It is the access time that counts.

Thanks. Correct me if I am wrong, 3.5" hard drive are only for desktop and 2.5" are only for laptop right? Also, are all the SSD are universal?

It`s only for reference.

You are incorrect, a 2.5" can be used anywhere. A 3.5" can be connected to a laptop externally.

But yes , a laptop uses a 2.5" internally.
