Hi,

I just sold a used Netgear DGN2000 Wireless Router with built in DSL Modem and the guy who bought it just called me and told me that while trying to set it up, Netgear wants to charge him $50.00 to switch the IP address. Has anyone ever heard of this and how can he do it himself, since he only paid $40.00 for the thing. Any help on this matter is appreciated.

Why did he call Netgear ? :confused: They have nothing to do with changing the internal or external IP address.
Did you change the ip address of the router before you sold it to him ? If so then he will need to type this ip into his web browser, then he can change it to what he wants. He will also have to key in the user name and password of the router. The default user name and password for netgear routers is usually
user = admin
pass = password

The default ip address is normally 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1

No didn't change it b4 I sold it to him, in fact I wiped it back to factory specs b4 I sold it to him.

I am also confused, he said he spoke to AT&T first and they tried and they couldn't do anything so he called Netgear and he told me netgear told him that it was registered with my Ip address and that to change it to his there would be a one time fee of fifty dollars, which sounds like a load of you know what to me.

I have a suspicion that maybe your ISP hardcoded the router at their end. I know that sky and virgin have done this in the past with some of my clients netgear and thomson routers. (basically it puts in the internet user name and password automatically and sets some other basic settings) so simply resetting the router to factory settings won't change things.
I updated the firmware to get around this issue, (this sets it back to truly factory settings) but this option is only to be used by experienced technicians or those that have used firmware upgrades before .... if done incorrectly it can render the router useless :(

Thank You, that sounds like the answer I was looking for, will give it a shot in the next couple of days, b/c I have upgraded router firmware before and we will see if that solves the issue.

Ok, I upgraded the firmware and did a master reset on it and as soon as he plugged everything in, it configured itself like it needed to and I am happy to say all is working now. Thank You PooMan UK for the help, I was seriously stumped on this one, lol.
