question about tts engins and the history...

so i have looked i a few places and i haven't found anything about the way the ms tts engines were made. i have previously thought that TTS engines used a voice model that was created from or based on an actual person... having said that i don't really know if that is true... i was wanting to now if the good old MS Sam tts voice was based on an actual person or just created from a synthesized pattern of sounds?

i was wondering this because i know that the product called Vocaloid has a voice bank based off an actual person...

this is just a curiosity question... :)
