Solved Question about Web Hosting

I would appreciate it if someone could help me understand how web hosting works. I currently have a web page of my own. Sometime ago I went to AwardSpace.com and have their free hosting service. I did pay a small amount to choose a URL name and had it registered. Everything has been and still is working fine. It has been at least a year or a little longer since I logged on to make some changes, but somehow I could not get logged on. I'm quite sure I used the correct user name and password, but still couldn't get logged on. I can't seem to get any help from them. Here's where my confusion lies: Since I already have my URL registered couldn't I just go to another hosting site as there are several free ones? If I did that would I first need to cancel that which I have with AwardSpace? I couldn't have two at the same time could I? If I had both of them and someone typed in my URL, would it go to AwardSpace or the new one?? You can see where I am quite confused as to how this works. I hope someone cans un-confuse me. Incidentally, since I can't log on to AwardSpace, I'm not sure I can even cancel it.

Here's the strange part: Every time I click on a link--even when I try to log on--the whole screen becomes dark. I then when to their FAQ and clicked on the link that says, "I lost my user name and password" instead of bring up an answer, the whole screen becomes dark. That happens when I click on any of their links.

I don't have any problem with Firefox.

I just tried IE9, and it's weird
- screens gets dark, but i can still read it.
- click on the screen again, it "flashes" and gets normal !

What browser are you using?

I'm using IE9 but I'm going to switch back to 89 and see what happens

I uninstalled IE9 and went back to 8. That solved the problem and I logged on with no problem. Thanks for your input.

To answer your question, you registered a domain name which is yours unless you decline to renew it. The domain name itself must be mapped via DNS to an IP address of the server hosting your website. So, if you wanted to move your web page from one hosting provider to another, you would have to contact whomever is authoritative for your DNS name and provide them with the new IP address of your hosting provider.

People "could' try to get to your site and may get the new one or the old one, depending upon whether their DNS has been fully propogated. These types of problems usually only last a couple of days. To help alleviate the issue, you could contact the DNS holder and set a low TTL for the domain for the time being. Then, people should timeout quicker and have to query for answer to a domain query again.

I just tried Compatibility View and it fixed the IE9 display problems for me.
