question about windows.old

when i get my copy of windows 7, im using the upgrade disk to do a clean install. ive read that when you do that, some folder called windows.old shows up. so, that makes me curious as to what gets saved in there. does it save your browser and all that kind-of stuff, like, apps? :sarc: sorry for so many questions guys, im just needing to know all this before windows 7 gets shipped to me.

Yes, you can upgrade by clean install. when ask chose CUSTOM, and clean. (DO NOT ENTER A KEY when ask-your KEY is upgrade KEY not retail. You will have 30 days to activate. way to activate is when booted,
insert the upgrade disk, run upgrade and when ask enter the "UPGRADE KEY". when finished, click activate from the system window.

that will then save your old windows as windows.old 100%, and you can use to open and copy all your favorite links to the new OS. It also show you everything you had installed. sort of a reminder. so very few programs will run, if they do then simply move to appropiate place. for the most part 99.9% is NOT WORKABLE. as stated.when you chose.. my option is "takes longer" but upgrade. then everything is 100% go. but plz 1. remove your Antiviris 2. disable the Firewall or if 3rd part REMOVE it.

There is one caveat to this. The Windows.old will not contain folders/data you place on the root of the c: drive

So, if you have a folder of C:\Stuff that folder will not be saved.
From my experience anyway.

to see your KEY. after it is installed MS encripts it so you only see a PID number.
to see the actual KEY. there is a FREE Key finder called; KeyFinder 2.0 use google to find. it is very accurate.
There is also a nice little program called System Information viewer.
you should be able to find the link via Google also.
I have tested both.

To save that file. move it to:
c:\users\yourname\stuff and it will be saved.
