Is there a way to prevent someone from taking the ownership of a file? in other words I want to protect a certain file by changing its permission settings, but this protection can be bypassed if someone changed the ownership settings of the file (by using DOS commands for examples)

Permission

if you take ownership and set up permissions correctly you can prevent changes

Set up a standard account with Parental Controls activated. Whoever you want to block from viewing the files will be under control from the Parental Controls.

Basically this depends on what other user accounts are set up on your machine. Any Administrator can take ownership of any file, unless this is explicitly denied - if anyone knows this last part to be wrong, please correct me on this one. So, your choices are - either to limit everyone else's accounts so that they do not belong to the Administrators group, or specifically deny permissions to them.

To deny permissions - right-click on the file -> properties -> security -> advanced -> permissions -> change permissions. There you pick the username of anyone you want to protect the file from and click edit. There you can explicitly deny all kind of permissions, including "take ownership", scroll all the way down for this one.

The way I understand it, the explicitly denied permissions are more powerful than the defaults, so that if you do that, the other person would not be able to take ownership of the file.

That file will never be protected as long as another administrator account is on the machine...

If you want to protect the file from the other users AND they don't have access to an admin account...just set the ownership to your User and set full control permissions to only yourself

I know it can be done by creating a non-admin account but it is unpractical to set another account and put a password to mine just to protect a single file...

Not unpractical because...would you want someone messing around on your user account?

It is a matter of security and privacy here...I know that my user account is my own and I don't want anyone else messing with it

thanks dude but encryption programs don't work with system files...

What i used to do in these situation would to change the extension of that file copy it to a location where noone would suspect even if they suspect without know what file is it they can't open it.
Ex. If you have a Word document SevenForum.docx change the File name and extension to something else like DataFile.zip so even if they double click it would say that Zip file is corrupt. This is the same process these Encryption program do but they hide it as well

It is a system file (located in system32/drivers folder) that my little brother always delete to bypass the web filter, I've tried lots of tricks to protect the file but he always manages to find a way through...

Your little brother...is clever to say the least...

Like I said...make him a limited account and password lock the adminstrator account for yourself...

might be a hassle but it should stop his attempts

One sure way to protect the file is to delete your little brother's account, and not let him use the computer, or if you want to let him continue using the computer, give him only a guest account, which shouldn't give him access to any system files.

One sure way to protect the file is to delete your little brother's account, and not let him use the computer,
