Questioning advice of a salesman

Howdy,
I recently purchased and installed a UPS. I was told by the salesman that I should put a Surge Suppressor before the power to the UPS, thus Surge Protecting it.
Does this idea have any validity. Looking for all opinions.
I am also running a thread on line noise trips to the UPS on start up.........

I've never used a surge protection before a UPS. A UPS regulates power to the connected devices. so, I guess you could use one to provide some protection to the UPS itself...but I don't think you have to.

Thank you for your response and opinion. Might you look at the other thread on "Am I doing something wrong", would the pre surge protector help that situation in your opinion?

The salesman mislead you. That APC UPS contains a surge suppressor, as do all UPS units I've every seen. An UPS works best directly plugged into a wall outlet, and not with an extension cord or power strip. This allows the surge suppressor within the UPS to work most effectively. I quote from a typical APC instruction manual:

Plug the Back-UPS ES power cord directly
into a wall outlet; not into a surge protector​

or power strip.

Read the manual - ignore the salesman.

If you use a surge protector with a UPS at all, it should be AFTER the UPS. I use one outlet on my UPS to power my main monitor and tower through a surge protector bar. It isn't really necessary to do that, but it gives me the ability to completely shut the power off to my system without having to shut off the UPS, which also powers my home server and media machine. It also gives me a little bit of extra protection.

No slight to sales people, since I was one many years ago, but most of them are not knowledgeable in the products they sell, and they don't really care about solving your problem. They just want to make the sale.

Thanks for the reply. I like your setup. Could you please look at the thread "Did I do something wrong". It talks about possibly getting line noise and a 10 second event which seem to coincide with whenever I turn the UPS on. I do not leave it on as you do. Can use the advise there. Take care Bud.
