The game I'm playing:
Combat Arms - Online FPS Action

My Computer's Specs:
AMD Phenom II N950 Quad-Core Processor @ 2.10GHz
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
4GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

Questions:
-On average, I get around 60FPS (according to FRAPS) in Combat Arms. Is there any way I can increase my FPS to around 80+?
-Sometimes, the FPS is unstable, and will randomly drop to 20-30. How can I keep the FPS stable?
-I use FRAPS to record my gameplay, but when I record, I get really laggy. I currently use the half-size option because using full-size causes way too much lag for me to even play the game. Are there any tweaks or guides that can help me record in full-size?

Only really tweak I can think about is overclocking you GPU, its dropping in framerates as it can't handle recording your gameplay as well as playing the game.

Lowering the textures and graphics quality will help.

But ultimately your asking a lot from the card.

While there maybe a less resource hungry recording software I'm not sure.

you would not see any difference while playing between 60 to 80 FPS as 60 is almost the smoothest :)

In a laptop, no. Not unless you have some way to get rid of the extra heat that will be generated from overclocking.

The specs for that game aren't very demanding,

Combat Arms Game Client Patch -- Online FPS Action

Start with making sure you have the latest video driver installed. No idea if it will work with yours or not,

ATI Catalyst

if not get whatever your laptop manufacturer has. Also if you have it installed, make sure that vsync is turned off or set to "application preference" in the Catalyst Control Center; or disabled if the option is present in the games settings.

Looking around a bit over here,

Combat Arms - Online FPS Action

looks like that game has all kinds of problems; crashing, lag, etc.

Also be aware that fps can also be affected by the PC itself, game patches, game settings, resolution, CPU, GPU, drivers, system processes running, etc etc etc.... You get the point.

With that said, this....

-On average, I get around 60FPS (according to FRAPS) in Combat Arms.

is pretty darn good for a laptop ;)

I have a "big fan" that is constantly fanning the left side of the laptop, where the heat is coming out...
What will disabling VSync do?

You might want to look here for tweaks/suggestions on the game - Combat Arms | Games Only Forum

As for V-Sync, you can try turning it off, and may even gain some frames, however you could also get some texture tearing of other graphical issues.

And just FYI, some (not sure yours is one) games may cause mouse sensitivity issues if V-Synce is turned off. So if you turn it off and gain frames, but notice issues with your mouse, well....

the easiest way, is to buy a new gpu, it might seem costly, but its the easiest way, with this biggest improvements.

Let's try this again, he has a laptop. Means no overclocking, and no new GPU. Overclocking isn't worth the risk, and it isn't like you can go to any computer shop and buy a GPU for a laptop.

And for those that didn't check the link I posted with the system requirements for that game,

carequirements.PNG

All things considering with system requirements like that, his laptop is more than capable of running that game. From what I could see looking around the official forums for it, it is more that the game looks like an unoptimized buggy mess than anything to do with his computer.

i completely missed the "mobility part" :(

game reminded me of early counter strike builds. then of a game i have on my playbook lol.

and i can think of 3 external laptop GPU's :p there was the asus xg ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Graphics Cards- ASUS XG Station it was discontinued but probably still track one down.

the vidock 2 which i only stumbled across via google.

and the ATI XGP.

ok admittedly non of these are current models but still you could still wonder into a shop and buy one.. well could.

Which is why I said he's doing pretty good to be getting an avarage of 60 frames per second ;)

Could he get more, probably, but that'll most likely require some game tweaks and stuff.

Vsync "syncs" the FPS the GPU is drawing to your monitors refresh rate.

In a nutshell, the refresh rate will be what your monitor is capable of.
So if its a 60refresh, it can only display 60FPS. A 75 refresh can only display 75FPS.
Its physically impossible for the display to show more FPS than its refresh rate.

So if yours has a 60 refresh, 60FPS is the MAX it can possibly display.
Letting the GPU render more frames is a bit pointless, as they extra are being thrown away and never make it to the display.

Also, when you start exceeding the FPS your display is capable of showng, you start to see whats refered to as Image Tearing.
To me, this is quite annoying.

I probably feel a bit differently than most in regard to Vsync, and there will be many that disagree with me for various reasons.

But IMHO, for the reasons listed above, I say Vsync should always be on.
The overall gaming experience will be smoother, especially if the GPU is capable of exceeding the refresh by a good margin.

In my experience fraps will drop your fps severely if you are recording to the same drive as your os and game are running off. If you can add a 2nd hard drive to your computer that will likely solve your problems, usb drives won't work. That's what solved mine. And I also used to record with fraps on my laptop.
