Okay, suppose I have 2 partitions and there is 10GB extra in each of them. Can I take 5GB from each and create 1 new 10GB partition? Or do I have to create 2 partitions of 5GB each and then merge them or something??

You can do either, but make sure your data is backed up first, just in case. Also be sure not to restrict existing partitions...you always want to leave plenty of free space.
