I have Windows XP,

I have Windows 7 but not in ISO just folders. I know it works, I dual-booted it on Vista but had to remove it as the laptop went for repairs. I want it on my desktop,

Can I do the upgrade from XP, then if I want to revert, I just do a re-format/destructive recovery via the recovery partition? Will that work?

No you can't run an upgrade from XP.

Alright. That's out of the question, so could someone tell me how to take the folders/files and burn them into an ISO image? But only if this questions answer is a yes: If I do a clean install, will it delete the recovery partition that came with my computer? If not, if I want to get rid of Seven and get XP back, do I just do the destructive recovery via the recovery partition?

Thanks,
Brendan

You can still run the setup and just install it over XP if you don't mind having to reinstall everything.

Edit: Seems we were posting at the same time.

If you run the setup you can't wipe the partition, but you can still install it on the partition. Your old files will be moved to a folder called 'windows.old' that you can take them from or remove.

If you want an ISO so that you can burn the image to a disk, there's plenty of programs that will do that.

Can I run the install from the HDD?

& I don't mind re-installing everything.

I just need to make 100% SURE THAT I CAN RE-INSTALL XP IF NEEDED VIA THE PARTITION

If you have the ISO extracted then yes you can run the install from XP, it will allow you do do a clean install (not an inplace upgrade). I would recommend if you have room to create another partition that you do that, and install 7 to the new partition instead of wiping out XP and relying on the recovery partition.

Alright.

Here's the problem, I don't know how to make a partition in Windows XP. I found the DSKMNGMENT tool similar to Vista's but doesn't work the same way.

I need a freeware app, that is like Vista's built-in one.

But, if I wanted a clean install, would I be able to re-install XP from the recovery partition? XD It's still under warranty. And installing Seven voids my warranty- I asked my warranty company, please don't argue it.

Yes you can use the recovery partition as long as you do not install 7 to that partition. Here ia a guide Dual Boot Windows 7 with XP/Vista in three easy steps - TechSpot

Alright,
So if I skip the dual-boot. Use the extracted files to install from desktop, then just when it's time for XP again I boot up into the recovery partition and voila, XP again? XD

I don't want to dual-boot really.

Mostly likely yes, if worst comes to worst you will have to fix the mbr as explained in the guide.

Alright. Sorry, I'm tech savvy but get confused easy. Here's what I'm doing: I have Windows Seven Build 7077 on a DVD via ISO. I'm going to put it in the drive, and turn off the desktop, then turn it back on and it will boot up for installation, then it'll delete the windows XP installation and just be windows seven.

So,
Few months later it doesn't work for me or I need to send the computer for repairs. I boot up, when the splash screen comes up, just press the F11 key into Recovery and do a destructive recovery and I'll have my Windows XP back, right?

Yes, and by delete XP i assume you mean format that partition.

P.S. forgot to mention you can run the setup from the cd in XP you do not need to boot from the cd. Hmmm maybe i should point out that the the recovery process returns the partition back to the factory install so any data you have added will be lost.

Alright.

Well, I meant like put Seven over XP.

So this is sure fire, no chance I won't get back into XP?

If you do not format the partion it will not delete XP, it will move it to a folder in case you wish to recover it (which takes up a lot of room on the drive). This is BETA software nothing is sure fire, that is why MS asks you to not use on your daily machine without making a backup that is not on that machine.

OK, here goes:

Laptop running Windows Vista x86 Business. Installed Windows 7 build 7000 as an upgrade - then upgraded to build 7048, then 7068.

2 nights ago I restored my laptop to factory defaults, in anticipation of upgrading to build 0777.

As long as you do ***not*** delete those recovery partition(s) *manually* you will be fine.

If you don't know about partitions, and are unfamiliar with the way things are, I highly recommend you get the assistance of someone who can help you while you are physically at your computer. If you know what you are doing, then you'll be OK. If not, you can easily hose the recovery.

I am not saying this to scare you, but to make you aware that it is not a simple "plug it in and away it goes" - you need to have some technical knowledge when beta testing an OS, this is not for the Novice to play around on for props or macho points.
