sorry I know it's not really relevant to windows 7
but..
is a serial key still valid after you activate the product?
I have a spare windows xp pro laying around and decided to use it.. the serial key works but microsoft is giving me 30 days to activate it..
why?
and could I still use the same disc to install pro to other computers?

Have a look at this link on activation.
For multiple installs, you will require multiple licenses (keys)

No... One license, one activation. You'll need acquire another key to activate another machine.
