I am looking to upgrade from the stock cooling that came with my AMD 1090T, the main reason being that it sounds like a jet engine when the PC is under load.
Any suggestions??

I like my Thermalright si128- this is the se and can use a 120mm low speed fan if you like. You get no more quite if no fan.. Use some ac mx3 or [s e x23] paste good to go.. AM3 mount with the s looking bracket is pretty easy and done from the top of the mobo. Just make sure your socket cooler mount has 3 notches on it and not just the one in the center- But I think a better upgrade version comes with the socket mount in the cooler box?. Older or am2 sockets or some brands use a 3 notch mount some only one on each side.. if only 1 notch it can break and the cooler fall off- the 3 notch ones have better support..>

** see in this photo on the mobo the blue mount goes around the cpu for mounting coolers- it has only 1 notch each side between the screws- not good or for this cooler any way. But I think a mount comes in the box or did with my si128 or they sell them at newegg or tr site. Great coolers tho. AM2 and AM3 is the same socket..

As a fact most any heat pipe type 3rd party coolers can be ran with out fans and should cool fine for normal use- maybe not so if a gamer or over clocker.. The si128's are right massive and cool well- case fans help but you have noise with them also??

Mine the si128 not se came with this s bracket and mount.. I am sure you can buy both if needed.. or just use the hardware in the box of the se.. they are near same coolers the se has more holes cut into it for better air flow..>

The quietest CPU cooler is the Noctua NH-D14.
The fans that come with the Noctua are quiet, but they're not the "quietest"... they're still ~ 20db.

What are the quietest then?
I wish I could remember. I read an article about them a few months ago I've been trying to recall since I saw this post... some German company came out with some new badass quiet fans. If and when I find it, I'll throw up the link. I was tempted to get one, but the assembly was round and I wasn't going to be able to fit it on my Thermalright.

In the meantime, just about fan under 10db would be quieter, like this one: 120mm Quiet Computer Fan - AcoustiFan DustProof

Don't get me wrong though... that Noctua is also one badass fan, and really quiet too. For all intents and purposes, since it's much quieter than any GPU fan, the Noctua can also be considered, "silent".
