just throwing this out as a feeler.

Windows 7 is obviously proving MORE Popular than even Microsoft could have hoped for - especially in these "Credit Crunch Times" -- Pricing will be a HUGE factor in deciding whether the OS really will be as popular when people have to PAY for it and the torrents will be more "Rigourously Policed".

Netbooks have also proved incredibly popular as well and these are still shipping mainly with XP on them (thereby ensuring Millions of extra users of XP even at this late stage in its cycle).

It would seem to me that VISTA is now essentially Dead -- even the SP2 Beta only lasts until Mar 2010 (same as W7 builds 7048/7057).

Is there ANY reason now for people to continue to develop VISTA anymore . It surely looks doomed for sure and while it has improved a bit it still doesn't hold a candle to either XP or W7 especially on smaller more portable hardware which is all the rage now.

Even a load of large businesses by and large skipped VISTA. As they need new equipment they surely will go directly to W7 -- they certainly won't do an XP===>VISTA===>W7.

So Welcome W7 and R.I.P VISTA.

Whilst XP will soldier on for a long while yet the demise of Vista will go largely unnoticed and unmourned.

I'll bet Microsoft never thought XP would still be the number 1 most used OS even in 2009.

Most businesses won't upgrade an operating system until at least Service Pack 1 (which we're likely not to see for Seven for two years from now).

Vista offers an easier learning path to Seven than XP does, and many businesses will not want to hang on to XP for another couple of years.

Hence, I believe there's a still a future (albeit limited) for Vista (SP1/SP2) in the business environment.

Actually I don't see why businesses have any problem with "hanging on".

Most offices tend to use applications which work quite nicely on XP -- typically MS Office (Powerpoint, EXCEL and Word -- Access isn't that much used BTW in business -- there's much better DB applications out there) and some ERP software which only needs a GUI on the users fclient PC.

Doing two software upgrades for many 100's of PC's IMO just won't be done and for those organisations that have 1000's of PC's certainly won't even THINK of 2 upgrades following on from each other.

There's no "Hardware push" for a typical organisation to "upgrade" -- the present hardware is MORE than adequate to run most business apps .

Bad response times to corporate ERP systems etc these days is usually the problem of the ERP system running on the server(s) or Network / shared Disk bottlenecks-- not the lack of resources of the client workstations. Another problem is response to corporate Intranets -- but here again this is a SERVER problem rather than lack of power or resources on todays client workstations.

The last major upgrade most corporations did was to replace the old CRT's with LCD's.

Specialized firms that need a lot of Photoshop / video production etc will have a different need but these aren't a huge market in the corporate stakes.

I'm quite sure that the whole issue of XP / VISTA / W7 on corporate workstations will revolve around the best bang for buck -- and IMO apart from possibly some people in the IT service dept the best solution would be to soldier on with XP until W7 is ready for prime time -- meanwhile some Power users could always be converted gradually to W7.

Vista sp2 isn't too bad as long as you have the hardware to run it properly.

I agree Vista will be around for awhile mostly because there are so many still using it and Windows 7 looks to be fairly expensive so many just won't upgrade unless the price comes down considerably. I had no problems using Vista once I took care of the UAC problems. I can't stand XP and don't know why anyone would still want to use it.

It is quite true that you must at least try Vista before trying 7. If you hated Vista for some reason, you might also hate 7 since it's basically Vista v2.0.

And about UAC, yeah. I have to agree I never liked UAC the first time I tried Vista. 7, however, taught me how valuable it is and how it can make you feel safer (e.g. Virtualization). It wasn't easy. I give my thanks to the sidebar not working without UAC on for forcing me to turn it on and see how nice it is!!!!

Windows 7 is not Vista v2. It is based around the Vista kernel but it is a new operating system.
I used Vista ultimate since before it was released (still have RC1 & beta 2) and I loved it. The hardware manufacturers let it down with poor driver support mainly.

I'm not surprised vista isn't as popular as XP... I mean besides all the bad press it gets, I myself skip every second generation of OS. No need to upgrade every time really, other then when I build a new rig, last time I built one until this one was back in the single core days.

I have both Vista Business on my laptop with SP2 Beta and Vista Ultimate SP1 on a desktop.

I don't think these two OS's are going to be outdated as of next year. They most likely will carry on for a bit longer.

Windows 7, when it is a final release candidate, will be the obvious choice for most people who are going to buy a new computer and OS.
