Radeon HD 6850

Well this is interesting I can't find information on the included power supply either.
The only way to really find out is to slide the side panel off and look at the power supply yourself.
They generally have a sticker on the side of them that details their outputs and total wattage.

Taking the side panel off is nothing scary really
just shut down the computer first remove the screws there are usually 2 to 4 of them. (preferably with a screwdriver that doesn't have a magnetic tip)
and slide the panel off.

You shouldn't actually need to touch anything inside there.
You just need to look at the label on the psu.
My guess is it's a lower end psu, pre built systems almost always are.

Hi,

I want to put the Radeon HD 6850 in my computer. However I do not know the power suply for it, so I though I could use some help. :D

This is my computer I just bought :

Asus - Essentio Desktop / AMD Phenom™ II X6 Processor / 8GB Memory / 1TB Hard Drive - CM1730-05

I would worry more abut having room in the case than I would about having enough power to run it. Usually the PSU is plenty but you have to have enough connector pins so you may need some adapters to change over some of your other power connectors to 6 or 8 pin. I would also suggest looking at the side of the PSU to find the output on it and then look the card up and see what the recommended is and what kind of connectors it takes so you can get adapters if needed.

This is my computer I just bought :

Asus - Essentio Desktop / AMD Phenom™ II X6 Processor / 8GB Memory / 1TB Hard Drive - CM1730-05

Specifications:

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Desktop- ASUS Essentio CM1730

According to this, it has a 300W power supply. Here are requirements for a fairly vanilla 6850:

http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1037&pid=497&psn=&lid=1&leg=0#

A minimum 500W PSU is required, with one 6 pin PCI-E power connector.

If it takes an industry-standard power supply, swapping them may be reasonably easy.

oh sure it might 'work'
performance and stability are going to be a factor at some point though.
My guess would be they are mostly playing older games and aren't really stressing the card very much by using the dx11 features.
Have them run the heaven benchmark on max.
Can just about guarantee the system will do a hard restart.

Hell my old nvidia 6800 could barely function on the 350watt
and that's a 7 year old card.

actually crysis would be the specific game that forced me to upgrade to a 500 watt. (on that particular build) Because on all the ice levels my system would... hard restart. It had actually worked fine up until that point.
Of course I'm talking about the original and you are probably talking about the new one.

I'm just quoting Sapphire.

500W seems excessive, as the card can't draw more than 150W if it stays within the PCI-E specs (75W through the slot, 75 more for the 6 pin PCI-E connector). However, it may cover poor 500W PSUs; you may be able to get away with less if the supply is any good (adequate current on the +12V rail). 300W seems a little dicey, though.

For what it's worth, I recently installed this card (XFX branded) in my Dell XPS 8300, which has a 460w power supply. It took one 6-pin molex connection. No problems so far, including running Crysis 2. But I haven't stress tested it.

If the psu has decent amps you should be fine with that.
Of course cpu, number of drives, number of fans, number of usb devices.
It all adds up, that' been the general point I've been trying to make here.

lol well more power to you think you can run a modern system with a gaming level graphics card on 230 watts.
My personal experience dictates that is completely impossible.
In fact even without the graphics card my system in the main room won't even post with a 350 in it.
...and it's a old socket 939 amd.

Sounds like a lousy 350W supply. (I think I used a Tagan 480W on my old S. 939 system, though. It's still in use by a friend.) I don't know what the required PSU rating would be for a system with a maximum power consumption of 230W. I've not done any experiments to match minimal PSUs to PCs.

Graphics card power consumption:

Imageshack - gfxpowerchartbybrandgen.png

This puts a 6850 at 125W max. (Nominal maximum for a card with a single 6 pin PCI-E power connector: 150W.)

The I7-965 used in the BitTech review is rated at 130W. That's 255W combined. Assuming an 80% electrical efficiency, that would be about 320W wallplug. The 230W number is pretty low.
