Solved Radeon HD6950 Screen Tearing on Duplicate TV

I have a 3 screen setup right now using 2 pc monitors and a tv. My monitors are extended and my primary monitor is duplicated onto my tv. my primary monitor is an asus ve278q . My secondary monitor is an acer x203w. my tv is an lg 47lv4400. Unfortunately, my when im viewing fast moving videos or games from my monitor, theres is a horizontal tear that moves through my tv but not the monitor. I have read a few articles about fixing it but I have not had any luck.

what is the refresh rate of your television? as if both your monitors are say 60hz and your television in 50hz, screen tearing can occur due to the miss matched syncing of the frame refresh.

the monitor is 60hz and the tv is 120hz, however I thought vertical sync was the exact solution to this type of problem. Is there anything in Catalyst Control Center I can do to bring the TV down to a 60hz refresh rate? Obviously I have tried to use vertical sync, but it didn't work

This is apparently a known issue with ATI cards and cloned displays to TVs. I assume it has something to do with the drastically slower response time of LCD TVs compared to typical panel monitors (100s of ms vs 10s).

From another forum:

I have gotten rid of this problem by making the following changes:

- Ensuring that my primary monitor (DVI) is the preferred display
- Changed pixel format on the secondary display (TV, HDMI) to 4:2:2

I can play any game with no tearing (provided vsync is enabled), including games without triple-buffering that previously exhibited the dreaded "line" near the bottom of the screen about 2/3 of the way down.

well looks like changing my primary to dvi did work, however my secondary doesnt have a displayport input and I can't have 3 of the same type of signals. All these stipulations make you think they don't want this to be easy. In any case thanks for the support, it seems to have fixed the problem

Glad it's (sort of) fixed!

Also, you can pick up a displayport to DVI adapter for ~$10 from Amazon. The adapter doesn't need to be powered unless you need to use dual-link DVI.
