Hey Earlz

Why would you want to use a ram drive in win 7, given that it has prefetch?

Prefetch isnt a ramdrive. Prefetch attempts to accelerate application and boot launch times respectively by monitoring and adapting to usage patterns over periods of time and loading the majority of the files and data needed by them into memory so that they can be accessed very quickly when needed.

Although it loads them into memory, its not in the same way a ramdrive would operate.

Understood. I know what a ramdrive does from my win95 days. Just curious why the OP wanted one.

Ah so you want to put the app into ram drive so it will load faster. The one issue with ram drives is loss of data in a crash.

You have a 64bit OS with lots of ram. I just wonder what is causing your app to load slower than you like?

With a 3.5ghz system such as yours, you really dont need to worry about load times. I have a 3ghz cpu and most of my programs load in a few seconds.

You could get a usb flash drive of 4gb or above and use that for readyboost. Readyboost also helps make certain applications load faster.

Of course, while a more expensive option, those wishing for instant loading apps these days should consider the purchase of a SSD (solid state disk). While not ideal for the OS with the stuttering issues, for running and installing applications, it might just do the trick.

Thought I'd bump the thread, and post this link:

grand stream dreams: Devio: Remote drive access and acquisition

Interesting reading about "devio" for remote access, using the IMDisk Virtual Disk Driver.

The blogger seems to be into 'computer forensics', with cool links here,
