I have 4GB ram, and idling with few programs open [A few chrome tabs - Including runescape, a java based game that uses 70-120mb per instance only, skype and windows messenger] i'm using 2.7GB.

Is this right?

Yes it is right but only 3327MB(3.24GB) of your RAM is usable since you are using a 32-bit version of Windows 7
Use the 64-bit version to use all your 4GB

Ah, okay.

How can I minimise RAM usage if I upgrade to 64 bit windows 7?

Would a 'professional' or even 'home premium' package be less resource-hogging than ultimate?

Nope, the editions of Windows don't make any difference in memory usage
Post a screenshot of your processes tab. 82 processes is too much
RAM usage depends on the applications you use

I'm now running 2 of the java game in chrome in high detail, so that's why the RAM usage for Java is high atm :%.

So the memory usage seems normal :)

Posted the bigger image with processes - I'm an idiot :o

Yeah, I was just wondering. It seems kinda' bad..
If it idles at say 1.9gb RAM, how do computers with 2GB of ram even run?

And this is on the lowest graphics settings possible [Windows classic, no effects etc]

You may have too much startup programs
Go to msconfig (Windows Key+R>msconfig>Startup) and disable any useless programs

Show all the processes. A 32-bit system should use 800MB-1.4GB when idle

Windows tries to use as much ram as it can so that the machine will run better, pre caching apps and files that are used often.
Unused ram is wasted ram, imo.
I don't have much running at the moment, Firefox with 14 tabs, Media player playing a song, Zoom player with a movie loaded, some running apps in the tasktray, like outlook, setpoint, amazon downloader, powerchute, ultramon, and a few other and I am using 4.4GB out of 16GB.
I have 99 processes running using 27% of physical ram.

Just fine, RAM usage is relative to how much physical ram you have. Also running on Windows Classic will take up a portion of your RAM and CPU. You should be using Aero. Aero lives on the graphics card, video memory and GPU.

+1 - also, when looking at resource issues (like memory usage), do yourself a favor and use resmon instead - task manager is not really going to show you what you want to see, but resmon will (on the memory tab). It even has a graph showing you how the memory is allocated at the bottom of that tab making it easier to see how the system is using the RAM.
