Solved RAM - which of these would best for my motherboard?

My W7 Ultimate is running on an Asus Prime H310M-E R2.0 motherboard.
It has only two slots for RAM and these contain 2 x 8GB DDR4 units as shown on the Speccy screenshot.

I want to replace these with 2 x 16GB. The motherboard manual says this:
DDR4 DIMM slots: Install 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB and 16GB unbuffered non-ECC DDR4 DIMMS into these DIMM sockets.

The other attached pic shows the available types of 2 x 16GB available from my merchant. Are any of these much better than the others? BTW: I realize that all of the RAM shown here is faster (at 3200 and 3600) than my installed sticks which I think are about half that speed. I assume this is OK?

Yes. The ram will run at maximum 2666 anyway on your motherboard. Looks like you have already enabled XMP in bios.

If it says 1333 that means 2666



Unless you want the cheap brothel lights on your ram, the corsair vengeance should be fine. Looks quite expensive at your merchant, what sort of dollars are they?

Do you need 32 gb? Maxing out your memory doesn't in itself speed up your computer. Having enough to do your daily tasks does. If you only use say 10 on any given day it'll mostly be wasted.

I had a similar asus h310m board. They dont have a huge number of pcie lanes and connectors but are fine for most purposes.

SIW2:. I have a separate GFX card, a GeForce GTX 960.
And no flashing colored lights for me. Dunno why orientals go for that stuff.
The prices listed are in NZ dollars. $NZ100 = $US60 or 48 UK pounds.
I attached the NZ (merchant is PBTech) price list because there's quite a variation from lowest to highest price. Is there a reason why some brands are dearer than others or is it just marketing hype? Like, 'if it's more expensive it must be better'.

townsbg: The main reason I want more ram is that I'm a lazy browser and often have so many open webpages that the OS gets constipated.

SIW2: The board works for my W7 requirements. It's quite modest but does pretty much everything I need.

So. Seems like I might as well go for the cheapest ram on the PBTech list?

I already suggested the corsair vengeance lpx. It happens to be the second cheapest on your list.

SIW2: Sorry, you did indeed, I didn't see it. Yes, the Corsair will do fine, seeing as there's no reason to spend up large on the other choices.

If the 3600 is hardly any difference in price, you could consider that. It wont be faster on your current motherboard but you might transfer to different mobo sometime in future.

SIW2: Again, thanks. I'd happily switch to a newer board with better facilities if I could find such a thing. But it'd need to support W7.

Using the PCPP Builder 'Parametric Filter' I've already input your MOBO and CPU information, set Memory speed to 2666. Here are the results. Choosing a slightly faster memory speed will give you more purchase options, but as you were previously told, your MOBO will max out at 2666.

Clicking the 'ADD' button on the ones with a price will show you where the sticks are available and how much you can expect to pay.

Don't pay any attention to the warning there, it's for a BIOS update for the MOBO with that CPU.

I assume US. That site was just to help you find compatible RAM for your system so you know what to look for on any site selling RAM. You don't have to specifically buy from them, but now you know whether you need DDR4 or 5, how many pins the stick should have and so on.

Pharaoh suggested an even better site, though. I didn't know PCPartpicker had a custom builder page, that's neat.

I ended up buying the 2x16GB Corsair Vengeance that SIW2 picked from my PBTech price list. Turned out they had a birthday special on so I got it for $NZ 122 - not a bad deal.

Yep, the price was good. After installing the ram the machine seem to be running a bit slow so I turned on XMP in the BIOS and it's now 100%.
