random bsod adobe LR often not always, may be double faults?

RACE mate Boris will be around sometimes posts get behind because of the time difference;)

If I could I would help out mate but I am just a newbie with that stuff more into hardware than anything.

Now with the overclocking are you able to reset any you have set up or are you actually giving it too much? My own Ivy Bridge has been playing up for some time and the clock settings, boot options etc in the BIOS kept changing back and forth making my life a misery. To cut a long story short it turned out to be the CMOS battery was just out of juice and a replacement battery has fixed the thing. Might be worth checking yours out for volts mate - as I said mine had drained to 1.02v and since I slipped in the new battery the machine flying again.
Now I am not sure if I linked my ditty on checking the PSU and various other component volts if I did just check that again the Vbatt on the "Nuvoton" board should tell you and volts on other stuff too. Let me know if I did send the ditty eh?

WELL, as usual, spoke too soon. Thirty minutes back it started just hanging the mouse and music stutter lock. wait a bit, it comes out for a few seconds. I am assuming that this overclocking thing is just not doable no matter how small it is. I have never had it work. BSOD and thus a new dump after a while. I have put it all back to defaults now. shall see. For Boris if you could, I would like to see if the other dumps have other issues in them. Still, better than was.

Hang on, are you serious about the overclock?

If you are, no wonder you've been getting BSODs.

Actually we normally recommend users to reset OCing while troubleshooting because it causes so much trouble, I must have missed that one. So please take down the OC to base values!

Cheers, Boris :)

Yes well I was hinting at that too Boris but just wanted to know if RACE had set it or someone else had for my money I would set the BIOS to default for starters;).

Hello again! NO, Boris, the OC was all after the fixing and is now back at stock, for, as I said I have never had it work and think it largely a myth. I have today been running into mouse/keyboard hard locks on both machines. SO
I have
1. Redone, again all drivers for mouse keyboard video on both machines
2. found on internet that this is a common problem w/ windows. I have done the suggested settings for Win7 in the UAC and it (seems) to be working on this machine, the one that has had all the real problems, but not the other one. It appears it is just turning off all USB ports at some random time.
3. I have run sfc /scannow on both machines at least 2X. It claimed issues on both machines. An observation is that my desktops have both gotten rearranged much by the system after scannow so, I do not know how deep scannow actually gets, just that it is done.
4. I am now hoping to ask you about the other dump files as I really suspect that there may be other issues.
5. Please remember I reflashed BIOS on this machine on 2 of the 3 bios that are available. I have never gotten to the #3 and it may be the old version. I am on defaults now.

Again. you guys have been wonderful and I do hope to get this made good again.

For Boris: glad to see you again here, we have a 6 hour difference so, not always fast. I have to go out of and back into this website to see replies. I do not know why they do not just show up. Thanks again.

Okay, no OC. Good.

5. I'm sorry but wha just wha are talking about? Do you mean that you have taken a BIOS that isn't the most recent one?

And for number 4, I will look at them tonight after work, there now until like 3pm.

Sorry for not staying that active, have been kinda restless these past days. And lots of things to do.

Cheers, Boris :)

GoodDay Again. Sir, I thought that what I wrote was clear, however, that is not so. start over

I have installed, in 2 positions on the mobo, the very last bios from evga. The mobo has a 3 position switch for 3 each bios installs. On positions 1 and 2 I have ver 1.22. That is the latest as this is a no longer serviced mobo. position 3 I have never even used and thus, (I suspect) has probably got v 1.21 which is what it shipped with. Now on Ver. 1.22 on position 2.

my very brief foray into OC is OVER. Done. finished. OC has never produced a usable result for me (no matter how tiny the change) and thus I will not attempt it again. Machine has had bios defaults loaded. I did select xmp1 in the memory section and no other changes. This would have had zero impact on your very helpful instructions as it was after that time.

Other than the very aggravating USB issue, I have had near 24 hours of on time without problem including 6 hours on Lightroom which is likely the most demanding program I use daily.

I have the program from windows to read dumps and have installed the symbols link. So, I can see the info, it just mostly makes no sense as I have no training in this area. Still, interesting. That is why your expert advice is so valuable Boris! You actually know something about these items. I will attach 2 more if you are willing to look and tell me what the item is in them. I may help my future use. (the downloader tool says that the dmp files are invalid and will not take them) Thus, I have run the dm log tool you sent me again, do not know if it is any use.

As SCANNOW reported 335 errors corrected the first time it ran I suspect that alone will be of some help. Thank you all for that and I have made a permanent note about that item. In the interest of keeping the forum on task I shall mark this as solved. You gentlemen have been of great service to a stranger. I shall monitor so that if you have more insight Boris I shall certainly pay very close attention.

THANK YOU BOTH and a big WELL DONE!!

Hello RACE.

In the future please do not mark a thread unless you don't get any more BSOD's!

The BSOD was 1A memory_management and I would recommend that you follow the tutorial below, just to be sure:

RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Thank you for reply. I did not know protocol here. Will ask next time. Just for info I ran memtest on each stick about 4 days back for over 2.5 hours each (2pass and a bit of 3, I got tired, it took 14 hours.) All said no errors. To make sure I will start it tonight and run at least 2 passes w/ all 4 sticks in the machine. Will put up the results tomorrow. If it goes on fast enough I may let it go 3 passes. (that would be ~20 hours) Thank you again.

Hmm well RACE mate it is no good running memtest for less than 8 passes as it states - you may as well not bother.
I suggest you run it overnight or start early evening and then through the night that is what I would do. You have to remember that not only have you got 32GB RAM but also I suspect four sticks?? Now that in in itself will take time - I could be wrong but testing just one stick may take less time but as I said you probability have four so just be patient and if indeed this is the problem then you are shooting yourself in the foot for the sake of checking those sticks.
Notwithstanding the test can or may show up errors in the slots just because you get errors will not necessarily mean it is the sticks. In that case then you will have to test each stick in each slot until you pin the culprit down.
So it could be worse ie
Stick 1 in slot 1,2,3,4 then stick 2 in slot 1,2,3,4 and so on in effect checking every stick for 8 passes in every slot unless you get lucky and pin it down to the stick that is bad but it still means checking the sticks in turn in a known good slot!!

memtest

gentlemen, I just ran memtest for 24 hours 30 minutes it did 4 passes only barely in that time. As each test pass takes longer than the previous one, I did stop. If this test is not useful in less than 8 passes what is it doing? If I do the time calculation gain it will take 80 hours to be close to 8 passes. Is that even usefuL? I ran this test to 2 passes just 4 days ago overnight on one stick at a time and it took 14 hours. zero shown errors in 24 hours w/ all those multiple billion calculations should absolve something it seems. If I am in error then let me know why.

ICIT2LOL: In just re-reading your comment, this appears to be around a possibly 100 hour test. Is there some kind of tester that can be purchased? I was hoping to do work on this machine this week not testing. Still, I have lost the contract over this useless thing, so, It is less meaningful now. If it is the 1,2,3,4 thing, I will still be out at least 4 days. Will repost if that is really what it takes... I assume you all will answer later.

Well personally I think there is something very wrong with your machine if it takes that long for 4 passes it really shouldn't take more than overnight say eight to ten hours.

There is no tester machine that I know of maybe some store techie might do now what I might suggest is to run the test on one stick in slot 1 if it passes then do stick 2 then stick 3 etc that way if you get no errors at least it means that the sticks are ok likewise if you do get errors you will likely have found the culprit stick.

Sorry mate there is no other way.

Just got up so I took a look. As I watched it rolled to pass 2@ 12:13:46. If this is read correctly, I think it means it is starting pass 3. Every time I run this test it takes longer, ie: runs slower I think. Does the same on the other desktop and this laptop. I went and got the version 7.1 off net. Made the CD. it runs as 4.3.7. uses one core near as I can see. I intend to let it go and just forego any work the rest of this weekend. MAC OS is looking better slowly.... As you may guess, I am becoming very frustrated. Reloading windows is now a non-player as MS has totally crippled all updates for win 7 in their frenzy to force everyone to NSA virus 10. (a bit of a political and observation statement that is just venting which you are free to ignore)

I will report back her in (likely) a couple days w/ whatever this result is. Thank you a great deal, both of you have been wonderful.

Race I am now wondering what memtest you are using because the one we recommend does not have a 7.1 version?? am now reasoning that you have got hold of the wrong test from somewhere so just where did you find it? - in any case the memtest we use is version 5.01 -
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool this link comes directly from this RAM - Test with Memtest86+ which gives the step by step instructions and as I said before I have never had one run for more than seven hours myself

So I read on anandtech forums that you might have bad RAM if it takes a lot of time or then a bad PSU or MoBo.

But I think ICIT2LOL has recommended this and that is to only run 1 stick for 8 passes and then the next one and so on. And that should shrink the amount of time it would need for each pass, and then you will know which stick is causing troubles.

However if you see no difference in time when running the tests for each and every seperate RAM module, I'm quite certain that it means the problem lies somewhere else!

Yes mate as Boris has pointed it does take a lot of time and just for the record I used that software you linked a LONG time ago and yes it took forever until I found this forum and got the one we recommend.

Now it may turn out that testing stick 1,2,3,4 in slot 1 brings up errors but to make sure I would then run stick 1 in slot 2 or 3 just to make sure that slot 2 or 3 still brought up the errors then if it does/did then you can be 99% sure that one of the sticks is at fault because it would be highly unlikely for more than one slot to be faulty. If there were no faults then I would be pointing the finger at the slot 1 (maybe one of the others as well.

Just as a by the by see if there are any caps around the RAM stick slots area for signs of going bad - bulging oozing printed circuit board scorching etc

Sorry mate but it is a tedious process - being there a few times myself but you may as well do it properly or not at all and if everything else in the machine tests out ok and then you find that a memtest confirms a fault there then I would be really peed off myself for not doing it first.

I am enclosing a photo of the time screen. After several false starts i did let this run into day 3. Not a misprint. I also ran both versions of this memtest86, the one you suggested on this machine and the one that I started w/ on the other desktop (P-55 mobo). I see no difference in speed that is notable between the versions from either supplier. The machine w/ 16 Gb ran about 1/2 the time of the one w/ 32 Gb. 16G took 27 hours. 32 G took 57 hours almost to the minute.

Using my laptop, I finally found a guide for that software from your recommended site. The guide clearly states there is no recommend amount of passes or time. It also stated very plainly that if memory had an actual problem that the program would almost certainly find such errors in 15 SECONDS or less.

The test is done, the memory seems good on both machines.
I have substituted/changed/observed the following
re-flashed bios 2X
Physically viewed the mobo w/ 4X glass twice for visible defects. I see none but, did not disassemble the cooler/fan from the cpu. That seems pointless.
changed the mobo battery for new 2X.
4 mice
3 keyboards
1 full set of RAM sticks. I borrowed those for two days. made no difference. Did this before starting this thread.
tested RAM for near a week.

I have observed randomly the voltages reported for the power supply and see no out of expectation numbers.
run sfc /scannow 3 times. It did do changes on 2 of those runs.
I have a cupid screen that I am going to attach as I do not know if it is trying to inform me that the ram is being run at 4 different settings or that those are possible or quite what.

The only possible changes would be to replace a very expensive power supply and then the motherboard and chip which means basically throwing out this machine and purchasing a new one. As both the P-55 and Z-77 series mobo's are out of production, that means a total upgrade that I cannot afford. The mobo vendor, EVGA, tells me that it is likely that if a mobo fails, it will actually quit or the part that is damaged will quit (ie. network, audio, NB, PCH, etc) leaving clear problems and operations will be degraded very obviously.. That does not appear to have happened. The CPU is obviously functioning or I would not be able to send this email from this machine. That leaves only the power supply. (you all will love this! I just figured out that these things are not advertising clikbait! As the kids say, I am so last century)

In light of the long ongoing efforts to find bad equipment in this event let me recall here that this thread was started due to BSOD beginning from the first mouse click after a software update from adobe. That software locked up instantly, destroyed the entire catalog (weeks of effort) and the BSOD issue began at that time. I had no issues before that event. I submit, the likelihood is that there is some issue in windows (or possibly still adobes stuff) that is making some kind of programing collisions (for lack of a more correct term).

Damn computers..........

Is there a way to reinstall/repair windows that will not take out all the updates?

Last observation: the BSOD are less frequent now. The machine will not shut down however. It just keeps the spinning wheel of death going forever. I left it that way 2hours 12 minutes one time. Then, it says "was not shut down correctly" and want me to pick the way to start. Messy. I have no idea now...

Ok RACE well if the test has been done and for the 8 Passes then all is ok with it. Personally I have not read that errors should appear within 15 seconds and from my experience they never have but that is a by the by.

Now reinstalling is as far as I know not possible unless you have an image for example to include all updates - remember the updates will include in all probability unless I have it terribly wrong those 10 ones that were around during the time that they were trying to get everyone to install 10.

Now where you got those random voltages out of the machine I don't know and as the machine is nit operational it is not going to be possible to run a test I made up with HW INfo software so all I can suggest there is to get a digital multimeter and manually test the leads yourself. You can use this article to find what cables are what volts - taking into account when I do this I alwasy use a black lead on the 24 pin plug for the negative meter black probe and also on of the board fixing screws to double check the board and are are connected electrically.
Now if you read this article as well Power supply unit (computer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) scroll down to see the 24 pin layout it - in the link in my part HW Info ditty it goes onto describing what pin 8 (grey cable ) on the 24 pin plug is all about and when powered on there should be a voltage there if that is not present or fluctuates then the PSU circuitry has something wrong with it and no volts will not let the machine start in any case.
Using HW Info
PART A:
You can test the volts on the PSU with HW Info HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download < download the right bit version and close the right hand window select Sensors and scroll down to the power section where you will see what the volts are doing see my pic. In my pic the section (Nuvoton) with VBATT as a dead give away you are in the section for the rail voltages. There are other section titles and one that pops up often is ITE (sometimes the usual one for Gigabyte boards)
Now the voltage on the different rails have to be within 5% =+/- of what is required or the machine will not work properly if at all.
Limits +/-
12v = 11.4 – 12.6v
5v = 4.74 – 5.25v
3.3v = 3.135 – 3.465v
The Power good signal voltage at pin 8 on the 24 pin plug (grey cable) should be the same as the 5v rail reading/s
See this for the rail voltage info
PSUs 101: A Detailed Look Into Power Supplies (Section 2.)
The original right hand window shows the machine running and is handy for that but for looking at the components in some detail close it and use the main left hand side panel
FOR OTHER COMPONENTS
PART B:
Open each small square with + in it on the section the components are in and then click on the individual component/s (it will highlight in blue) - in the right hand side will appear all sorts of details including brands speeds and other essential info that particular device. See pic for example.

Let us know if anything is out of whack with that.

When the machine is finally going this is a good software to get in depth info about components too.
