Random BSOD after changing to new SSD and new Asus Mobo

I am experiencing very random BSOD. I keep my HTPC on 24/7 and this happens usually when I am not on a computer or have a huge copying job running. I have run memory test and there are no errors.

Just changed my SSD and Mobo. I was previously having BSODs as well but I think I nailed that one by updating the firmware on my OCZ Vertex 3 SSD. This is a very new install. Just installed about 7 days ago and left it to run to see stability, but it doesnt seem to be stable.

Only one memory dump in the uploaded reports. If you're using a disk cleaning utility, please stop while we're troubleshooting.

We've seen a number of BSOD issues with SSD's. Here's the information that I've compiled so far:

There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

Here's some suggestions:
- Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
- Update the motherboard controllers drivers to the latest available version from the controller manufacturer (NOT the mobo manufacturer unless you can't find any on the controller manufacturer's website)
- Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
- Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself): Crystal Dew World
- Update chipset and storage controller drivers to the latest available from the manufacturer of the device (not the manufacturer of the motherboard). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard!
....NOTE: Recently (Nov 2011) we had BSOD issues with the Marvell 91xx controller and an SSD. You may have to switch controllers also.-
Replace the SSD with a platter based hard drive and see if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, then it's likely that there's a problem with the SSD OR an incompatibility with your system.
It's my opinion that SSD's aren't reliable enough (with current hardware) to be used on a system that needs to work reliably. Until I see reliability I will not recommend, nor will I use, SSD's for critical applications.

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Win7 systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).
Please uninstall the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): DuplexSecure - FAQ

KernSafe iSCSI initiator, Virtual CD/DVD-RW Emulator, Virtual Encryption Disk and Virtual CD/DVD-ROM Emulator All-in-One free software.

Wow, I appreciate the amount of information you have put in your response. I will be looking and addressing each of the items in your reply to see where I am going wrong and to eliminate all issues.

Some immediate ones I can report on:

1. The Samsung 830 256GB SSD has the latest firmware installed.
2. Have installed all the drivers from the motherboard installation CD and any updates from the mobo support pages.
3. The SSD is connected to an Intel controller in AHCI mode.
4. Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are not installed so I dont know how these drivers made their way into the system, will have to clean them.

I will look into all the other drivers and update or remove them.

What is the best way to remove these without Windows going bezerk? I am sure its not as simple as deleting the files.

Visit the Intel Download Center and download/install the latest drivers for the controller on your mobo.

Check Control Panel...Programs...Uninstall a program for the uninstall routine for Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120% If there's nothing there, then look in the Start Menu for an uninstall routine (these are listed in your MSINFO32 file so they should be listed in your Start Menu).

Then use the tool that I linked to in order to remove the sptd.sys driver for Daemon Tools - that's the most significant problem that you face.

If you can't find the other programs that installed the drivers, hold off for now to see if removing Daemon Tools/Alcohol 120% has fixed the problem.

If it doesn't fix it, post back and I'll post instructions on how to SAFELY remove the drivers.

i just wanted to report that I could not find Alchohol or Daemon tools anywhere on the start menu, control panel, programs and features etc. cannot locate the program files as well so its a bit of a mystery where they came from.

Also, I cannot see the link to the tool you mentioned to remove sptd.sys driver. Perhaps you forgot to link to it?

After a do a fresh install, I may again end up with some of the driver files you listed above, should I just update them to the latest of try to remove them?

Search your hard drive for sptd.sys (most likely located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers)
That's what says DaemonTools/Alcohol (although there were other signs in the MSINFO32 report).

It's the sptd.sys driver that's the most common problem - so removing that will remove any problems. If the driver isn't present, then post back and I'll rerun the reports (I'm late for work or I'd do it right now).

Just got home from work.
I looked at the memory dump again, and the sptd.sys driver is still in it.

As for MSINFO32, I looked at it again and there was no trace of sptd.sys in it, nor was there any evidence of Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120%.

I did find this tho':

Start Menu\Programs\Backup4all Professional 4\SPTD Public:Start Menu\Programs\Backup4all Professional 4\SPTD Public

It appears to have a component of the sptd.sys driver. I'd suggest uninstalling it to see if that helps.

Hi Usasma

Hope you are well and thanks once again for all your help. I have done a full reinstall a few times since I raised this issue but I am still stuck with Random BSODs. I have now been able to pin down how I can reproduce it every time as a test once I have changed something.

When I attempt to install Windows 7 service pack 1, 6 or 7 mins into the install, BAM! BSOD. Now I know for sure how to reproduce it so once I can successfully install service pack, I know I am done.

Now I think this has something to do with the hardware. Read in a few placed about USB items connected, so disconnected them all before performing the install.

Also tried disconnecting all other drives and one by one all other drives except the boot drive.

I have even gone as far as replacing the SSD. Got rid of the Samsung assuming that was the culprit and got an OCZ vertex 3 240 GB only to experience the same issue over and over again.

The system that has been installed is very new and I have 3 or 4 worth of BSOD information in there for you to look at. I have not installed any drivers besides VGA and LAN.

I have also removed my sound card in the hope that it might be the culprit.

Anyways, I hope you can point me in the right direction here. I am note sure what exactly is causing this but I can know its resolved for sure once SP1 successfully installs.

You must let Windows install drivers from Windows Update when installing 7 - then you must check Device Manager for any missing/unknown/uninstalled devices, and install them from the manufacturer's website.

Do you have a platter based hard drive that you can install Win7 on?
If so, try that (no need to activate since you get 30 days before it expires).
If you can install SP1 on that installation - then you've placed the blame squarely on the mobo controller (this presumes that trying 2 different SSD's rules out the SSD's and their cables).

Please use this procedure when installing Windows (it's a testing procedure that I use):
Backup, Wipe, and "Clean Install" of Windows

For testing purposes, it's best to install Windows "clean".
This is, basically, installing it the way that Microsoft intended (using drivers from Windows Update).
This procedure is for Windows 7 and Vista.

You will need your installation/recovery DVD(s) before you start. Once you wipe the hard drive there's no going back!!!

1. Backup all your data.
This will wipe everything off of your hard drive, so anything that you want to keep will need to be saved elsewhere.

NOTE: If this is due to an infection, remember to scan the data with another system's current antivirus in order to locate and remove any malware.
NOTE: Disconnect any additional hard drives (internal and external) that you may have installed. This may break any multi-boot setups that you have, so be prepared to conduct recovery operations on them once you're done. Don't forget that, if this is due to an infection, the additional hard drives may be infected also.

2. Connect the system to the internet (if the system says disconnect from the Internet, then do so).

3. Use one of these free utilities to wipe the hard drive clean:
KillDisk ( Freeware Download Active@ KillDisk ).
DBAN ( DBAN Download | Darik's Boot And Nuke )
This will also delete any recovery partitions on the system - so the installation/recovery DVD's are essential!!!

4. Install Windows by booting from the installation/recovery DVD - DO NOT tweak any settings!!!

5. Visit Windows Update and get all updates

6. Check Device Manager for any unknown/disabled devices - if there are unknown/disabled devices, fix them with the latest drivers from the device manufacturer's website (not the PC Manufacturer)

7. Visit Windows Update and get the Service Packs for your system. (usually under Important Updates).
Read these notes for installing Windows 7 SP1: Learn how to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Steps to follow before you install Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 from the Microsoft Download Center
Read these notes for installing Vista SP1: Learn how to install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Read these notes for installing Vista SP2: Learn how to install Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)
Search Google/Bing for installing other OS's Service Packs.

8. Visit Windows Update and get any other available updates

9. Download, install, and update a free antivirus so you don't get infected while testing ( Free AntiVirus ).

10. Test to see if the problem remains.
If the problems persist, then the problem is most likely with your hardware.
If the problems are gone, then proceed with installing the latest version of your favorite programs, testing after each one for errors.

CAVEAT: If you have an Asus motherboard, check the date on the C:\Windows\System32\driver\ASACPI.sys file. 2004/2005 is a problem, 2009/2010 is OK. Updates are available at the Asus support website.

CAVEAT: If you have a Sony system, make sure that you DO NOT have the 2007 (or earlier) version of the Sony Firmware Extension Parser (SFEP.sys). Update this driver immediately!!!

The volume "Dirty Bit" is set on the disk. With platter-based hard drives there are only 2 fixes for this:

I presume that SSD's would be treated the same (as this is a file system error), but am not certain. I'd suggest that you seek advice for this at the SSD manufacturer's support site.

Are you able to install Windows Updates without installing SP1? There's only 4 on the system - and I've seen Win7 systems (w/o SP1) that have over 100 updates installed.

Due to the lack of chipset drivers in this installation, I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the cause - as driver problems are one of the major reasons for Service Packs not installing (the other is malware).
