As expected, no virus or other unwanted infections.
At the moment it appears that removing Intel Rapid Storage has fixed the problem as I've got all the items I normally let run from Startup running and no BSODs after forcing many, many automatic backups over several days. I'll let this go a bit longer before marking it finally solved.
