Random BSOD, possibly related to new SSD? (Win 7 Pro OEM)

Hello, excellent forums people

I'm helping a friend diagnose this laptop. Here are the model numbers and small history of it, which I feel may help point in the correct direction for a diagnosis:
Model is a Toshiba Satellite C870.
This laptop was supposed to come with Windows 8, but the owner downgraded to 7 pro OEM from factory. This configuration worked OK for a few years, but the hard drive started getting bad sectors a few months ago. The owner enlisted my help, so I created some recovery discs while the drive still functioned, installed a Silicon Power S60 240gb SSD, then reinstalled Toshiba's OEM windows 7 from those recovery discs.

Everything worked fine for about 2 months, but now the laptop gets random BSOD's. Sometimes they'll happen within 2 minutes of booting up, and other times, one can run the laptop for 48 hours straight without problem.

The device manager is not showing any obvious driver issues (no yellow triangles with ! marks), and Windows Update states everything is up to date.

sfc /scannow command from Elevated command prompt also states that everything in Windows is groovy.

I updated the SSD's firmwares, and got another BSOD about 10 minutes afterwards, so I'm going to rule that out, haha.

I've followed the forum guidelines for a new thread & have attached the requested files to this post.
Any assistance you could provide for helping me root this problem out would be greatly appreciated.

This is something to do with the SSD, or at least the connections to it. Can you double check and ensure all connections are fully seated.

Boozad, thanks for your quick response.

I reconnected the solid state drive twice, it's still giving intermittent bluescreens. Also did a teardown of the laptop to make sure there wasn't a loose connection from the motherboard to the SATA connector, but it appears to be directly joined to the mainboard.

Also ran a chkdsk /f on the suspect drive, it came out clear.
Followed that up with a drive health utility on Hiren's Boot Disc. Also came out clear.


Edit for further info: Since this seems to be an intermittent problem, I will boot the laptop & open a text file to help check if the laptop has crashed & rebooted by the time I come back to it. While I had one of these text files open, I noticed that it looks like the Windows task bar keeps crashing. (In other words, the notification icons keep vanishing & reappearing, and the toolbar itself will turn black and drop away, then reappear a few moments later.) (The Auto-Hide feature for the task bar is disabled.)

I disabled all startup stuff except antivirus and Covenant Eyes via run > msconfig.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for responding.

I did some further research, and have attempted the following:

-remove windows generic ssd drivers
-reinstalled chipset from toshiba's support site
-ran driver verifier command on all non-microsoft drivers on system.

Everything was looking really good, i had rebooted probably 15-18 times, with no BSoD. (It would most typically happen within the first 5 minutes of booting up.) Decided to stop running the driver verifier, and then Chrome browser started crashing repeatedly, eventually leading to the "windows explorer goes black and stops responding, but you can still see desktop background" thing. Chrome even repeated this behavior twice after reboots, so I'm not sure what's up with that.

Anyhow, rebooted a few times, and it seems stable again. I've had the browser open for 20 minutes this time around. I took the logs as you requested, and have attached them to this post.

Can you give me the make of the SSD? It's still pointing to the drive, it may be worth looking at any specific toolbox program from the drive manufacturer. Was Driver Verifier enable during all of these BSODs?

Hi, it's a Silicon Power S60. Silicon Power S60 3K P/E Cycle Toggle MLC 2.5" 240GB 7mm SATA III 6Gb/s Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - Newegg.com

No, I disabled driver verifier and had at least 4 more instances of google chrome crashing weirdly & then windows explorer flaking out, leading to a non-bsod complete crash of windows. (At least, I never saw a bluescreen, the laptop will just reboot & complain that it wasn't shut down properly.)

I will get in touch with Silicon Power tomorrow.

I'm sorry if my information is vague, but I hope it helps at least somewhat. Would you prefer that I leave driver verifier on for a while & send you a fresh log? Please let me know.

No, Driver Verifier isn't going to help in this instance I wouldn't have thought, let's exhaust all options we can regarding the SSD or SATA output on the motherboard first, then we'll look at Windows files. Let me know what Silicon Power say and we'll work from there.
