Random BSOD when selecting Shutdown

Hi there,

I have just built a new system (constructed 22-3-10). I have had 2 BSOD between then and now. Both times they have occurred when selecting Shutdown.

I have hibernate enabled and also screen sleep (30 and 15 minutes respectively) and have screen saver disabled. The machine has no issue going in and out of hibernate. I have also stress tested the machine for hours with games, internet etc and it is rock solid. Occasionally though, just selecting Shutdown will cause the screen to go black and instantly generate a BSOD which then causes it to restart.

-Windows 7 is up to date with all the MS drivers
-I have Catalyst 10.3 drivers installed for GPU
-I installed all the drivers that came with the mobo, including the Asus EPU-6 app which is set to "High Performance"
-CPU operating at 40 degrees C at idle
-GPU operating at 43 degrees C at idle

Looking at the Event log I see the following critical error after a BSOD:

Is anyone able to help me or point me in the right direction?

Many thanks!

Thos crash was probably caused by the dxgkrnl.sys which is part of your video driver. I would get the uninstall tool to remove all the remnents of this driver and install a fresh copy.

Let us know if you need help

Thanx for the response!

When I first installed the system i downloaded the latest Catalyst drivers which at the time was 10.2. I had one BSOD that occurred when 10.2 was installed. It was interesting to note that after the reboot from this BSOD my GPU gadget was showing corrupted textures and reporting an nVidia GPU with the nVidia logo. After rebooting it was back to normal. This is what caused me to be suspicious of the Catalyst drivers. So when 10.3 was released a few days ago, I uninstalled 10.2 using the Catalyst add/remove and then rebooted Windows, then installed 10.3 fresh. This was on the 26-3-10. The second BSOD I had last night AFTER I had clean installed 10.3 which is why I am now thinking it could be something else?

EDIT: Just had a thought. I did notice at one point during yesterday's use of the machine for 5.5+ hours that at one point Aero turned off and then turned back on by itself after 60 seconds or so. I had been installing Crysis and the associated Game Arcade stuff. Went on to do web browsing more gaming etc, and then when I selected shutdown I go this BSOD. I have a feeling I saw this Aero restart once before as well, it could well have occurred prior to the other BSOD I had but I didn't take note. I'll keep an eye on this as well in case it's a display driver in the Catalyst software having issues......
