What does the bsod say? press F8 before windows loads and select "disable automatic restart on system failure". Next maybe you should try a HDD surface test. Even the checkdisk should reveal any potential problems. Check the video card also, using a stress test like furmark (freeware). Have you checked the system temperatures in the bios?

You can use the Windows checkdisk first as it;s the easiest. In explorer right click your C drive and select properties. There's a tab there where you can start checkdisk. tick the "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" then hit start. It will say it can't do that because the drive is in use and will ask you if it can do it on the next start. click yes then restart the PC and the scan will begin. If there's a problem you're sure to notice. Either it will lock up or will start to spit out some garbage that it can't read some sectors. If there's nothing of the sort try another program from a bootable CD or floppy.

Yes it could... many things could. That's why it's important to notice what exactly the BSOD says. If it says anything like nv****.sys then it's the driver or the video card or mybe it's just not getting enough juice from the power supply.
