Hi,

I was wondering if anyone might be kind enough to have a look at the crash files that I get from my PC.

My PC is running Win7HPx64. It is about 18 months old. The OS was full-retail. The BSODs started around October 2010, for no obvious reason. Now I am getting them up to 3-4 times a day, and then none for a week at a time.

I have already done thorough scans of the HDD, RAM and driver updates with no progress.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Jon

Hi.

In this order,

Remove comodo from your system.

Remove avast from your system.

Dont install 2 antivirus\security in the same system you cause bsod.

Download and install Anti-Malware, Virus, Spyware Protection | Microsoft Security Essentials

Run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html you may need to run it 2-3 times to "fix" everything.

Run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

Finish with the above steps and post back with any results.

Hi,

Ok, I see. I had Comodo as the firewall, and Avast as the anti-virus so was not aware of any duplication. Anyway, I have uninstalled them both.

I also went to install MSE, only to find that it was already installed (and apparently functioning) which is a little odd, as I recall I have had to specifically disable aspects of it before to avoid reported conflicts.

I tried running sfc /scannow but it says 'you must be an administrator running a console session to use the sfc utility'. Well it is my PC and mine alone and I don't understand what that means.

Apologies, I'm not techie.

Hi,

I have MSE installed now, and fully up to date.

I also worked out how to run SFC from the Command Prompt as Administrator (google brings you to explanations as to how to, posted on these very forums by Brink).

I ran it three times. The first time is stopped at 10% verification saying 'Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation'. The next two runs were fine with nothing reported.

I'll run Memtest tonight overnight. I'm pretty confident it'll be ok as I ran it 2-3 times a few weeks back and there were no issues to report.

It might be false hope, but I haven't had a BSOD since uninstalling Avast/Comodo. We'll see, I didn't get a BSOD for several days recently after updating the video driver, and thought then too that it might just have been the fix.

I'll revert!

So far so good. ;)

The memtest is an extra test to ensure that everything is working fine.

Ok well it has been about a week, and time for an update.

As mentioned the system seemed stable for 2-3 days, but now I am getting BSoDs again, currently averaging one a day.

Six of eight of these have been Ntosknl.exe errors, the others NTFS.sys and MpFilter.sys.

Is there a way I can zip up say the last week's minidump reports and post them here, rather than post the whole large file again? Or does anyone have a better idea?

Thanks

Thank you for that. I am running a full scan with MWB right now, so we will see how that goes.

It is true that SFC stopped on the first scan, but it had no problem completing a further two. Are you suggesting that there could still be corrupt system files?

p.s. I also see a new 'Attention' banner at the top of the thread re: how to post BSOD issues. I have been following that very 'How To' right along, so am unaware why the banner has just popped up now. Apologies if I have done something wrong, I'm unfamiliar with this forum format, and find aspects of it a little 'new'!

Nothing came out of the full scan on Malwarebytes.

I have to say I am reluctant to do a Windows Repair, esp as there is an open question over whether you understand how the SFC ran when I did it.

Upload any newer dumps, that may help us with the diagnostics :)

SFC may not have found corrupt system files, so that may not be the issue

I uploaded the latest files in post #9 in this thread/topic. There have been none since then.

re: your second point, I don't understand. Why would I need to do a Repair Install if there are no corrupt system files?

re: your second point, I don't understand. Why would I need to do a Repair Install if there are no corrupt system files?

Because SFC cannot always find/fix some system files. Moreover if some drivers are badly installed a Repair install would install 'clean' versions of these drivers.

Hate to say it but this makes little sense to me.

A Windows Repair Install won't fix 3rd party drivers as far as I can tell. How could it?

Am I missing something?

Well, by doing so it will reinstall older generic WHQL drivers for all your hardware devices. Any bad drivers would be removed.
