Hi all,
Experiencing random BSOD's and other various problems. Sometimes windows explorer will keep crashing, or IE8 and Firefox will repeatedly crash or not open at all.

My ASUS M4A78T-E motherboard has all available driver updates from the ASUS website. Graphics card, GeForce 9800GT has driver update from Nvidia site.

I appreciate any help I can get. minidump files are attached.

Are theese since upgrading or did they just suddenly start?

Sorry, yes since upgrading. Had XP, installed Win7 OEM by booting from DVD, formatting drive, it did not upgrade XP from what I understand about the process.

Whole new system except for the harddrives:

ASUS M4A78T-E drivers updated from ASUS support site
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT driver date: 11/20/09
AMD Phenom II x2 545
DDR3 1333 RAM 2x2GB

I know its not the best, but I ran the Memory Test that comes with windows, and it said I had hardware problems. Motherboard site says it supports this RAM, so I went into the BIOS and set the RAM to be recognized as 1333 instead of being set to auto. After reboot, Windows memory test said there were no problems. That was about 2 hours ago, don't know if that really helps or not.

I believe the problem is with you Memory.

1, Download Memtestx86 and run for 5 passes
2, Run the System Integrity Checker - Start sfc/ scannow right click and Run as Administrator
3, Run the Memory Diagnostics & HD Diagnostic

Hope this helps

Thank you for the advice jack. Ran memtest+86 more than 5 passes, no errors. This was after I changed the BIOS RAM settings to 1333 instead of "auto" detect. Also since that time, no random BSOD, when I should have had at least one when comparing history of them since build. I have had the problem though where IE and Firefox will crash or not open at all, along with windows explorer. A restart fixed that, but it will happen again.

I tried running sfc, nothing comes up if I type in "sfc/ scannow". But I do find sfc if I just type in "sfc". If I just click to run it, or if I right-click to run as admin, it doesn't run. It pops open on the screen and disappears right away. Maybe something to do with my settings? I am logged on as admin, but I haven't set a password if that matters.

Am getting set to run memory diagnostics and HD diagnostics. Will update.

Edit: actually I will not run the memory diagnostics you suggest in #3 since it says to run memtest+86 which I have already done.

Ok, ran HD diagnostics with program from manufacturer's site. No problems.

The only thing is that I haven't been able to run sfc:p

Something that may be of note:
When all this first started, my first thought was to re-install Win7, since it was a few BSOD's and mainly some funny things with programs crashing or not running. I decided to run the Win7 CD with windows running since I wanted to do a custom install and save files that were on the disk into windows.old. Everything goes fine up until the installation copies files, it will stop at x%, meaning it was random each time I tried. I will then get an error message that says the installation cannot continue because of missing files/can't find required files.

Hi -

There is a space before the forward slash - not after - sfc /scannow - and it is a line command to be executed from a cmd/DOS screen -
START | type cmd.exe | RIGHT-click on cmd.exe above under "Programs" | select "Run as Administrator" | copy/paste or type the following -

Code:
[FONT=Lucida Console][SIZE=3]sfc /scannow[/SIZE][/FONT]

Re-boot upon completion.

Information on the System File Checker -
SFC general info - [URL]http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212[/URL]

SFC - the CBS log -
[URL]http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228
[/URL]

I ran the 14 dumps and do see the references to memory - but mostly paged memory. I found a driver of interest to me as I have seen many BSODs caused by asio.sys - the Asus PC Probe driver. Your's is from 2007 - before Windows 7's time -
Code:
AsIO.sys Mon Dec 17 04:11:49 [COLOR=red]2007 [/COLOR](47663D55)

Did the BSODs start on Sat Dec 26 19:34:51.545 2009 (GMT-5)? None before that, regardless of OS?

That first dump shows the process running at the time of the BSOD = DAODx.exe - related to Asus mobo software. Do you recall a BSOD while updating your Asus drivers?

I would also suggest that you run the WIndows 7 Upgrade Advisor --> [URL]http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx[/URL]

My Computer

OS
Windows 7 - Vista
I ran the 14 dumps and do see the references to memory - but mostly paged memory. I found a driver of interest to me as I have seen many BSODs caused by asio.sys - the Asus PC Probe driver. Your's is from 2007 - before Windows 7's time -
Code:
AsIO.sys Mon Dec 17 04:11:49 [COLOR=red]2007 [/COLOR](47663D55)
Did the BSODs start on Sat Dec 26 19:34:51.545 2009 (GMT-5)? None before that, regardless of OS?
Yes, none before that because it is a system I put together brand new, all except for the HDD's. Too many problems with the HDD's (long story, I had an OS on each and couldn't get them to boot in the new build together nor alone) I can't remember if I was able to boot this build with XP or not. Either way, the drive was formatted when I installed Win7.
That first dump shows the process running at the time of the BSOD = DAODx.exe - related to Asus mobo software. Do you recall a BSOD while updating your Asus drivers?

I would also suggest that you run the WIndows 7 Upgrade Advisor --> http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx
No, no BSOD's on updating the BIOS or ASUS drivers. In fact after I did them I thought I was good to go.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I ran System File Checker and it said everything was good to go. That was until I remembered to re-boot. I re-boot and about a minute later I get the BSOD and it specifically says aiso.exe. So I boot in safe mode and uninstall PC Probe. Re-boot and same thing about BSOD, but it indicates aiso.sys. So I re-boot in safe mode again and search for "aiso" and it gives me "aiso.dll" and "aiso.sys". I try to delete those but it said they were no longer there. So I guess the driver is gone with the uninstall, or would system file checker remove it? Do I need to do anything with regedit to make sure?

Thanks for the help thus far:party:

And just to make sure, I did run Win7 compatability and everything is good.

Did you format the drive w/ KillDisk (or similar product) or did you allow Windows 7 to have the honor? If the latter, I would suggest that you low-level format the HDD w/ Killdisk and re-install Windows 7.

No nitpicking here, but the Asus probe driver name is ASIO.sys - not AISO.sys

What problems did you have with the HDDs?

Of course I had Windows 7 do the honor, inexperienced that I am. I should probably do a good format and reinstall. Yes, I messed up "AISO" and "ASIO" in the post.

It wasn't physical problems with the HDD's. I had a japanese XP installed on one and english XP on the other for a dual boot. I bought all new hardware, except for the drives, I put everything together with the drives having the OS's on them and the system wouldn't boot. I'd get the win startup screen for a second, then BSOD with no time to be able to read the error. So I then switched around the drive cables thinking that would help and it didn't. I tried each of the drives alone, and of course that didn't work because of the boot.ini. I put them back in my old system and then researched how to get rid of dual boot, didn't find much, except about editing the boot.ini and just removing the OS from boot.ini that I didn't want to start. The boot.ini was only on one drive, I imagine the 1st one in the boot process in BIOS. I edited it to remove the OS that I didn't want to use, but it wouldn't start the one I wanted to use, it would start the one I removed from the boot.ini for some reason. The drive with the OS that I wanted to use wouldn't boot if installed alone.

So anyway, I put the drive that would boot into the new system and booted it with the Win7 dvd to install. After it was installed, I put the other drive in and formatted that one also.

Anyways, I have just run the system file checker again and it said no problems again. Re-booted just to be sure, and no BSOD yet.

My only reason for concern about the driver name spelling was to be sure that you did the search on the right one. Were you able to update asio.sys?

I am glad to hear results of SFC and of no BSOD... yet.

As for the formatting... not all that long ago, I too thought that a "format" was a "format".

Funny thing, I tried doing updates to all the ASUS drivers and software from the ASUS support site just to be sure everything was good because I had problems again. When I tried to run any of the updates, I'd get a BSOD. When as a last resort, I grabbed the cd that came with the mobo to grab the ASUS update program again, if I clicked any setup program on the mobo cd I got a BSOD when the file ran. And each BSOD of course listed an ASUS driver or executable as the culprit.

So I finally took the long way around, formatted the HDD and installed windows 7 again. I'll be sure not to get any programs or drivers from ASUS anymore since I have already flashed the BIOS and chipsets to the latest versions. It's is also interesting to note that a search for daodx.exe turns up nothing on google, and people on the ASUS forums don't know exactly what it is. But it is on the ASUS mobo disk. Can't figure out exactly which program it is, or what it does, though.

Thanks all for the help, it is much appreciated. I was just trying to get around having to reinstall everything again:o

We'll see how this install works:zip:

All four dumps point at memory corruption although it could also be a bad driver affecting the memory
i would run memtest again for as long as possible just to be doubley sure, sometimes bad ram can pass memtest without errors sometimes it takes lots of passes to show errors, i would recommend getting 5 passes as absolute minimum preferably more.

check all your voltages in the bios make sure CPU and Ram are set to proper settings incorrect voltage can cause this issue the board as you have already seen does not always set things correct when auto is used when I setup a new build the first thing I do is load the bios and go over every page and get the settings right if you do not and just go right into installing OS you may end up chasing your tail trying to figure out why things are unstable

The last 4 dump files are essentially the same as the group that jcgriff2 analyzed. Try running Driver Verifier according to these directions:
Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out.

Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page, then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post.

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.
If that doesn't work, post back and we'll have to see about fixing the registry entry off-line.

I agree with Driver Verifier.

Also could be RAM, but seeing so many references to the page file leads me in the direction of a rogue driver.

BTW - I found drivers belonging to Windows One Care Live in one of the dumps. One Care Live was discontinued on June 30, 2009.

When did you install it? Did you have BSODs prior to installing OCL?

What was the installation source?

Thanks for all the replies. I understand you guys have more experience than I do, but I'd rather make sure that all my RAM settings are correct since it is all currently auto in BIOS. If incorrect setting are causing the issues, then I think that verifier would always find a problem. Sooner or later, if the RAM setting are the problem, it will fail and whatever was accessing memory when the problem happens would be pointed to as the fault. Waiting for a response from the manufacturer of the RAM.

I have never heard of One Care Live, I do not know how it got on the 'puter. I look at all windows updates and usually only do critical/security ones and not the optional. Windows defender comes with Win7 automatically now, and I have Microsoft Security Essentials. Could those files be associated with those programs now?

Once I have proper RAM settings in BIOS, I will run driver verifier again.
