Random disconnects

I've been doing this a good long time, you havn't., I have already seen many 64 bit systems fail to work unless the router was supported for 64 bit. It's that simple, it happens all the time. NOw if you don't mind I would like to stick with my line of questioning. And you can stick to yours. Fair enough?

Your theorys on this are not correct as you seem to think.

And as you noticed the Op seems to have problems with simple questions which I asked 4 posts ago.

Pythen, Please answer this most obvious question of them all, is your system 64 or 32 bit?

chev65: Let's not get personal here. This is a technical forum discussing a technical issue. I do not wish to get into an argument with you. You DO NOT know my background nor my experience. You may be very surprised. I don't question your skill or experience so please do not question mine.

Oh were far from being personal. Your the one that questioned me remember? I do know that you attempted to derail a perfectly good line of questioning that has already worked countless times.

My point was that you havn't been here long enough to know that if there is no 64 bit support it most likely will not work properly. I have already done this about twenty times when there was no 64 bit support and the problem was fixed with a router upgrade, plain and simple.

I already have a pretty good track record here and I would appreciate if you do not derail my line of questioning in the future.

At no point did I question you or your experience. It's evident now that any time you are working any issue that YOU are the only one allowed to contribute. My observations are valid. However, I will back out to avoid any further problems.

"the problem was fixed with a router upgrade, plain and simple."

Is this solution for the Atheros Adapter's connection drops? I was planning to get a new router (Windows 7 Compatibility Netgear Netgear Rangemax Dual Band 802.11n WNDR3300 Wireless Router) but was waiting until I moved my office downstairs. Just adds some more to my "to buy" list :P

The router you posted the link too will work fine. I've seen a few problems with the Anthros adaptors though so upgrading it might help as well.

Yeah, once I clean install windows 7 (probably using system builder version, I've messed up my computer a bit too much, and don't really upgrade often)...I will try out the D-link adapter again, with the new router. I'm hoping it will help a ton, but hoping hasn't ever gotten me anywhere.

Well at least you will be trying to make it work with hardware that is known to be compatible. If you dont have that going for you then you would have no idea if it was the hardware or something else that might be the problem.

Mhmn - That's one of the reasons I am going to clean install W7 (By the way, should I keep the original HP recovery partition for vista?). On newegg, where I bought the adapter, all the recent reviews say that it works fine with W7x64.

worked out of the box for Win7/64-bit. didn't have to install drivers from enclosed cd.
had full bars with initial antenna orientation (i just pointed them apart like a crow's foot - nothing scientific or fancy). and this is with the desktop being a the far corner, of the bottom floor of the house, under a desk, semi-tucked away. the N router is on the 2nd floor.

Worked right out of the box in Windows 7 Pro 64-bit without any added drivers. This is the best card and I checked out a bunch of others before deciding on this one. I also love the fact it is PCI-E.

Worked out of the box with Windows 7 and Vista (both x64) at 300 mbps with a D-Link DIR-655 router.

etc.

Should be fine then. Hey I have that router also DIR-655. I think a reinstall then using compatible hardware should get you up and running.

Sorry for continual "bumps" - but I have a few more questions about the clean install for Seven. I am debating between OEM system builder and retail windows 7 home premium, and I've heard the main difference is support from microsoft (does this mean technical support, or that I can't have updates and whatnot), and the fact that you can't transfer the installation down the road (which is fine, since I generally buy prebuilt PCs from companies like HP or Sony). I want to follow This guide to do a fresh install, can that be done with the OEM? Also, by clean installing with my own OEM software (if I use that), will I still be eligible to receive support from HP? I know these are sort of specific, but I'm concerned.

OEM System Builder from Newegg: Here

With the OEM it means that you can't call them up with any problems that you might have, so no support from Msoft in that regard. You get the Windows updates just fine, no problems there at all. You should have no problems installing the OEM version of Win 7 but there are some things you need to know. Read on...

Yes the OEM license is only meant for one machine.
The PC maker is required to provide support for Windows. Except for security issues, Microsoft will not provide free support for any issues you have with Windows purchased from an OEM.

Although it is possible for an individual to buy a System Builder copy of Windows 7 and install it on a new PC, that scenario is specifically prohibited by the license agreement, which requires that the software be installed using the OPK and then resold to a non-related third party. More info on this in the link below.

Is that essentially a recommendation to purchase the retail version instead of the OEM?

Well not really unless you might need the support. It's a license agreement is all and the wording was changed this year to reflect the new rules.

I would personally still go with OEM.

Partial Necromancy, FTW!

I am about to order the OEM windows 7 x64 Home Premium, and had one more question. Since it's a clean install (after backing up my data to an external storage device...) will it essentially install in the exact same way as retail would? Will I be able to use THIS as a basic guideline?

There is a turtorial for this here on the forum. You need to do a couple of extra things to get a clean install from the upgrade CD but it's easy.

But the OEM version as well?

Edit: if I had vista on the computer originally, and the sticker containing the OEM product key on the side (it is an HP), could I Still use the method described in the link you posted to clean install from the upgrade disk? Or is that now void since i installed windows 7 dual booting with vista, then deleted the vista partition? That/the situation is a tad confusing, if you don't know what I'm trying say, just ask.

Edit 2: note that the "clean install" at this point would be from windows 7 to windows 7. I can recover my system to factory installation(vista) using the hp recovery partition if needed, but I'm not sure if it'd still be activated, or how much more it would muck up the point of a clean install with stray files from the first vista, current windows 7 RTM, and the "new" vista I might be going back to, depending onyour answer to the question:

Maybe this clean install tutorial will help you answer some of those questions. No need to worrie about the legal aspects as you have a copy of Vista which is paid for already which qualifies you to legally use the Upgrade CD.

With the clean install you may not be able to use Vista but you can access the files in a folder that Windows will create called "Vista Old" which you can easily delate later to free up harddrive space.

This tutorial will answer most of the other questions I think.
