Hi all,
Been getting random freezes lately where first my screen will freeze and then usually a few seconds after my mouse will and then i can only resolve this with a reset which then usually solves it.

It tends to happen after long use but my temps seem fine.

have gone into event viewer but it's all gibberish to me and i don't have a clue what to look for. would appreciate any advice you have to offer. I have posted a pic of my event viewer screen.

thanks

Sorry but I cant read the snip. I would also be interested in what it says in event viewer

To check for freezing/crashing you need to check several things.

1-Event viewer.

Type eventvwr in search and go to the windows log>application tab & system tabs.
Look for errors. Errors have red in the left hand column.

Look for errors that say app hang, or app crash, or anything related to the problem.

When you find them either take a screenshot of them and upload them to us, or note the event ID and source codes and look them up in google. If you cant find them in google tell us what they are.

This might help you Weird Vista Business 32-bit behaviour during installation of SOME games/programs from DVDs

Seems to indicate win installer 4.x is available and may fix the issue

Thanks for your very quick reply. I will download this. I have 64 bit is it still relevant? Although I wasn't installing anything during the freezes could this still have caused it?

Thanks again

I'm not sure if it applies to my problem as I don't often install via DVD drive and don't get problems installing games. Any other ideas or things I should look for? Surely a hardware failure would cause a bsod and not just a screen freeze

ok well just got home and i have windows installer 5 so it can't be that issue :( I'm finding this very confusing coz i can be gaming for hours on end and then just suddenly get a freeze when im on firefox usually. I've never frozen during a game

there is one thing i'd like to confirm with you guys. locking up and freezing is almost definitely a software issue right?? if it was hardware i'd be getting bsods etc?
have run memory diagnostic and passed so i doubt it's that

Just noticed you were still having problems with the application errors. I have some experience in this area and thought I'd add my solution steps while zigzag3143 is away.

The Event ID 10 is a common error; I've had it myself after installing SP1. See Event ID 10 is logged in the Application log after you install Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 for steps to fix it.

Typically Event ID 4373 means you have corrupted system files. Run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html up to three times to fix all errors. Post back if it continues to show errors after the third run or if the first run comes back with no integrity violations.

I'll leave the remaining steps in zigzag3143's very capable hands. :)

just done the first step to fix event 10. was very quick. meant to be this quick just clicked the fixit icon downloaded and then ran which took literally 2 seconds.

cheers for your help so far. will add rep.

Also just wondered if you could confirm my previous question as to whether it is nearly definitely a software rather than hardware problem causing this?

It could be a result of either, though software is more common in cases where the system hangs and does not shut down unexpectedly. See if the above steps fix the problem before proceeding further. If you continue to have hangs, you can use the steps to http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ation-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html and determine if it is related to application conflicts.

Did you determine the problem; was it a program?
