I am sure there have been posts about this, but I am in the middle of making supper and have 2 kids running a muck so I need to make this quick. In January I bought the retail version of windows 7 home premium. I formatted my computer as I have windows xp home installed. When windows XP was in my computer I had no issues whatsoever. This computer originally had windows vista, but I did not like it, so I removed it and put xp in it 2 yrs ago.

Here are my current stats

When I installed windows 7 in January it froze up constantly, sometimes right on start-up, other times within an hour but never more. I could have been surfing the net, I could have been just leaving the computer sit, not doing anything on it. It drove me insane so I removed windows 7 and have not re-installed it. My mom and sister both have less ram then me and older computer then me and have also purchased windows 7 and have installed it and have no issues at all... so what gives, can some help me please. I have both 32 bit and 64 bit available to re-install but refuse until there is fix for this.

Welcome to SF!

I hate to say this, but due to the nature of the freezing, we kind of need to have Windows 7 installed to work on it.

Have you run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor? If not, please do so.

You will want to install the 32-bit version of Windows 7 for your system.

Yes I had and it passed everything, the only thing it told me to check was to make sure my printer was compatible (I did not have this printer in Jan)

I am afraid to re-install it, because it would freeze up all the time, so I would never have a chance to get back to this site to try.

I will likely re-install it over the weekend, i have to backup all my pictures and such on my comp. 1st

It's possible it was a corrupted install, or something. Could it also be a 3rd-party program you installed?

When you reinstall, don't install any more than you have to.

Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your anti-virus, and avoid Daemon Tools and other similar software.

i installed it directly from the windows 7 cd i bought at walmart with the keygen included, I hadn't even had a chance to download anything such as daemon tools, etc. The 1st time it started freezing, i removed it and re-installed it again with another clean format, again freezing occurred..

Careful using the term "keygen" around here! Some may take it out of context and report you as a pirate, even though you purchased it legitimately.

A keygen (short for key generator) is a tool used to make product keys for software, so that the user doesn't have to purchase one.

Did you clean the drive before you installed to it? When you are ready to reinstall, do a clean all from Diskpart. Be sure to remove your backup drives first!

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/52129-disk-clean-clean-all-diskpart-command.html

Test RAM whenever you get a chance. It can be tonight it you wish, as no backup is needed, and it doesn't involve Windows 7 or XP at all.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

Finally, when you reinstall, disconnect all unnecessary hardware, such as webcams, external hard drives, additional video cards, and other USB devices.

Sorry yes I meant Product Key, not a key generator.

I will try those other things you suggested.

I went here: Acer Support - Aspire E380 Specifications

According to that, XP is the latest OS it supports.

Then I went here: Acer Support - Download Drivers

I plugged in your computer model, and I see it has drivers available for Vista, but not 7. The Vista drivers are dated 12/11/2008, which is considered incompatible with 7.

I then researched your individual hardware, and tried to find some newer drivers.

Here is a chipset driver that MAY work. No guarantees, it might not even install.

NVIDIA DRIVERS 15.49 WHQL

I wish you the best of luck, but honestly, your system just might be too old to run Windows 7.

Besides the obvious fact that you are at the absolute minimum for RAM

There are several ways to find what the problem is. The best is to go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Go to the windows log>application tab.

You want to look for critical errors (they have red in the left column ).

When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

When you find them please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

Let us know if you need help with any of this.

The program firefox.exe version 1.9.2.3855 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.

Possible Memory Leak. Application (C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceNetworkRestricted) (PID: 1016) has passed a non-NULL pointer to RPC for an [out] parameter marked [allocate(all_nodes)]. [allocate(all_nodes)] parameters are always reallocated; if the original pointer contained the address of valid memory, that memory will be leaked. nothing for crash/freeze etc.

I will see if I can buy more ram next week

Here is my suggestion: install Vista on it.

Vista uses even more resources than 7, so it will likely run a bit slow, but hopefully no freezes.

If you get no freezes using Vista, we know it is a compatibility issue, and you're best just to use XP.

You don't need to purchase a Vista license, just borrow a DVD from a friend, and use it unactivated. You can use if for 30 days before it expires, but that should be plenty long enough for you to tell if it freezes or not.
