Hi folks, new user here. Trying to follow the rules! Lemmee know if I need to correct anything or provide any other information.

My Windows 7 install started hanging randomly yesterday, about once per hour. First few hangs were while web surfing, then while watching videos. First the application hangs, and I get the hourglass mouse, and I can usually click on a few things in Windows before it hangs too. The mouse cursor will still move but is otherwise functionless everywhere. Ctrl-alt-del doesn't work. Only option is a hard shutdown by holding the power button.

I've started a few virus scans using MS security essentials, but every time it hangs before it's complete. Used Windows applications to check RAM and the OS disk, both on restart. No errors reported.

Just an hour ago I got my first honest-to-god BSOD about 3/4 into yet another attempted virus scan. First security essentials gave me error code 0x80010gba (for the first time), then everything hangs like usual, and then the system BSODs and restarts.

Here's the error I got on restart:

Alright, thanks for the tip. Actually just had another system hang again (no BSOD this time though) while running the SF diagnostic tool! Grrr. Got it the second time though. Minidump should be attached. Going to bed for tonight, thanks for any help you can provide!

I don't think I have.

Also, I'm not overclocking.

I'll run through the rest of the things on the list and post back with my results.

Okay, so I've now updated the firmware on my SSD, and installed the new XFastUSB package.

I couldn't figure out how to update either of the two USB camera drivers you mentioned. My webcam is a HUE HD webcam; I went to their website and downloaded their update software, but every time I tried to run it, it gave me a weird error, telling me the device could not be found (even though it seems to be present and working fine) and that I should unplug it and plug it back in (which does nothing; it gives me the same error after I do so and try the software installation again).

I also didn't understand which part of the "updating drivers" tutorial you linked I was supposed to follow, if any of it.

Hoping the HD firmware and USB driver updates resolved the issue, I'm going to try to run an antivirus scan again...

Those USB camera Drivers can be deleted or renamed more than likely, to do this:

Navigate to:
  • C:\windows\system32\drivers
  • Look for the drivers in the driver folder
  • Right-click and rename to: 2np2sxp.sys.old and SNCAMD.SYS.old
  • Reboot, see if it causes any issues, pop up messages for driver install etc.
  • If everything is ok, then it will be fine to delete the drivers
  • Navigate back to the drivers folder, this time right click and delete (instead of rename)
  • If you experience any issues go back to driver folder and rename back to original name.
The updating drivers tutorial was more for reference if you got stuck :)

So once you remove those drivers, reboot and monitor the situation.

Look forward to any feedback you may have.

Cheers

Dave

Okay, virus scan completed, watched a video, 4 hours since last restart...I'm going to cautiously call this case closed. Thank you so much Northernsoul55 for helping to solve my issue! I'll do my best to pay it forward. Great forum you've got over here. :)

I went ahead and renamed those drivers, and rebooted, but all that did was stop my webcam from working. Tried to install the new HUE software, but it kept telling me that it couldn't find the device. So I went back and changed the names back to how they had been before, and rebooted again, and now everything seems to be working fine. Looks like my main issue was resolved after I updated my SSD firmware and updated the USB drivers. I'm gonna leave the webcam drivers be for now. If I have any more problems I'll be sure to try a fresh webcam install, or just remove that device. Thanks again for all your help!

Ok sounds like a plan :) those drivers were not BSOD related anyhow, just old
so it will be fine, just see how things go.

Good luck and glad to of helped out.
