Random Lockups in Windows 7 64 bit

Hi all, hope you can help me on this...

My 6 months old PC started to have frequent lock ups since last week. I originally suspected a problem update with the Nividia video driver from Windows Update and did an uninstall and fresh install. The look ups become less frequent, but it still happens.

A check in the Event Viewer, I noticed this message has been appearing since Feb 2010, and everyday now:

"The system could not successfully load the crash dump driver.

Log Name: System
Source: volmgr
Event ID: 45"

I had experienced occasional lockups when using Lightroom 2 since I have this PC, but I am getting more disturbed as the series of lockups is getting frequent.

Is this lock up directly related to some problems with my primary hard disk?

Sgxsun Hi and welcome

Please run a chkdsk as outlined below.

Also run a system file check - to do so type cmd in search, then right click it and run as admin, then type SFC /SCANNOW.

CHKDSK /R /F:
Run CHKDSK /R /F from an elevated (Run as adminstrator) Command Prompt. Please do this for each hard drive on your system.
When it tells you it can't do it right now - and asks you if you'd like to do it at the next reboot - answer Y (for Yes) and press Enter. Then reboot and let the test run. It may take a while for it to run, but keep an occasional eye on it to see if it generates any errors. See "CHKDSK LogFile" below in order to check the results of the test.

Elevated Command Prompt:
Go to Start and type in "cmd.exe" (without the quotes)
At the top of the Search Box, right click on Cmd.exe and select "Run as administrator"

CHKDSK LogFile:
Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Expand the Windows logs heading, then select the Application log file entry.
Double click on the Source column header.
Scroll down the list until you find the Chkdsk entry (wininit for Win7) (winlogon for XP).
Copy/paste the results into your next post.

Doesn't seem to have a problem based on the above. I have also ran sfc /scannow and no errors are reported. However, my PC lock up again when I was trying to reply you just now....

I guess more tests are needed to pinpoint the problem...what could the problem be?

Have you Googled or searched Microsoft for information relating to what was found listed in your Event Viewer?

We need to investigate other areas of your computer
Please provide more details ....

1. How was Windows 7 installed - Was it an upgrade installation or a clean installation?

2.What anti-virus application or security suite is installed?

3.What anti-spyware applications do you use?

4.What firewall are you using?

5.Has Norton or McAfee ever been installed on the
computer? (e.g., a free-trial version that came pre installed when you bought it)

Here are my answers:

1. How was Windows 7 installed - Was it an upgrade installation or a clean installation?
It was a clean installation though the installation was done by my pc vendor

2.What anti-virus application or security suite is installed?
Norton 360 ver 3

3.What anti-spyware applications do you use?
As above.

4.What firewall are you using?
As above.

5.Has Norton or McAfee ever been installed on the
computer? (e.g., a free-trial version that came pre installed when you bought it)
I have only installed Norton 360 ver 3, full version

I had tried searching for a solution in the web and this is how I ended up here. I can't find any solutions in Microsoft or elsewhere that pinpoints to the problem, though there are many threads that indicate that the memory modules or motherboard could be the cause.

I had done MEMTEST and ran 6 passes with no error.

I now intend to reformat the harddrive and do a re-installation once I have the time....as the lockups are getting more frequent. It now happens every time I use my pc for a while...unless I am using Safe mode.

Hi Jan and all,

Just to update you that my pc crash issue worsen after I formatted the harddisk. I informed my vendor and have my whole pc sent for repair.

It turned out that my motherboard was the reason behind the crash issues. It has since been replaced and my pc is working properly now.
