Hi, I have a problem with my laptop. I have windows 7 x64 installed but i also had this problem with windows vista x64. Randomly it will either restart or black screen (with the power light still on). There is no real pattern to this and hasn't happened for 14 to 15 days until i used it yesterday (3), and has happened today (2) also.

I checked in event viewer and this is what it said:

Hi,

I can't seem to find it . It should be in C:\windows\minidump? Also tried searching for it as well but nothing. I looked in system then start up and recovery and it's set to "write an even to the system log" at the location of %SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP

Never had a blue screen on my laptop, if it doesn't restart it black screens (i don't know if that helps).

So i tried to change the location just in case there was something wrong but every time i did it said the location doesn't exsist. So i left it as default.

Update. I've installed the latest graphics card drivers (beta) for my radeon mobilty hd 4650. I did have the "latest" ones from the windows update but i've had issues on my other computer before. Also when i've been on the ati website before now it said it didn't support this mobilty card and to contact the manufacturer.

My specs are:
Laptop
Intel core 2 duo cpu p8700 2.53GHz
4.00GB
Windows 7 x64
Radeon Mobility HD 4650

Update: It's happened twice today, in the space of say 20 mins. The first time it happened (when i had vista installed) i thought it might be overheating, which makes sense but it's been 13 to 14 days since it's happened this month. That's with it being used everyday

The MEMORY.DMP file is located in the C:\Windows directory
It's overwritten each time that you have a BSOD - so it's important to save them until you reset the system to save minidumps.

To do that, please follow the directions here: Set MiniDump

Meanwhile, you can zip up the current MEMORY.DMP file and upload it to a free file-hosting service. Then just give us the link to it so we can download it.

Try this, it should identify if a BSOD crash is occuring:
MSINFO32:
Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Save the report as an .nfo file, then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.

If you're having difficulties with the format, please open an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt and type "msinfo32 /nfo C:\Users\Public\Desktop\TEST.NFO\" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then navigate to the C:\Users\Public\Desktop directory to retrieve the TEST.NFO file. If you have difficulties with making this work, please post back.

I'm starting to think it is overheating, but i don't know how to prove it! I've now got a cooler to put underneath the laptop (only cost £10 so i don't know if it works?).

My main concern is the fact that if it's overheating why is it not doing it all the time. Why only now and again and every 10-15 days? Any info would be great ;)

Not all crashes generate a dmp file, bu i suspect you need to configure you system control panel>advanced settings>start up and repair> enable writing as in the pic

Nope, no BSOD issues - so it's probably that the system is crashing before the dump collection process is completed. Not a problem, just difficult. Please stop the system from rebooting automatically and copy down all the info for the BSOD's.

Problem devices:
Not Available (probably COMPAL Embedded System Control) ACPI\CPL0002\2&DABA3FF&1 The drivers for this device are not installed.
ENE CIR Receiver ACPI\ENE0100\3&11583659&0 This device cannot start.

I would suggest visiting the Laptop manufacturer's website and downloading all of the drivers from there.

Please blow the vents on the laptop out with canned air (DON'T use an air compressor or a vacuum cleaner - they'll damage things).

ENE CIR Receiver ACPI\ENE0100\3&11583659&0 This device cannot start. Same with this

So the above i have sorted out and haven't had a problem but like i said they are random. Had them happening when i had vista installed with all the updated drivers installed. I thought it was over heating but i now have a cooling deck, the last time it happened it was on it. I've checked the vents and they are clear. And it is set not to restart.

The only thing I've changed is it's now on balanced power plan, it was on high performance and it hasn't happened since. If it was overheating would win7 write it in a memory dump?

Hey,
The good news is that the black screens have stopped :D. But I'm now having crash's, not like a win 98 crash where you can't move the mouse and the whole thing becomes unresponsive. It's just slowly but surely locking up, still functioning but what ever i do is making it worse.

When it happens i only know because when i try to open anything it will either not open it or open a window with nothing in it. Can open the start menu but can't access the options for shutting it down. Tried to restart but alt+ctrl+del doesn't do anything. So pressed the power button so it shut down, but it doesn't and black screens. I do get an error sound, but i can't see because it's black screen. Have had one recently but to do with bluetooth says something about a stack error?

Also had an error the first time this happened when i was playing dragon age, came up with something to do with the video card not being accessible but that was only when i tried to click on something.

I'm completely lost with this....
