Random slowdown

Hi there,

I have been having very bad lag spikes and they last for a few minutes. It is so bad that everything slows down and the actions take places after some seconds. I think it might be my wireless connection but the weird thing is instead of internet slowing down the whole comp slows down. I have a C2D 2ghz. I have this problem when watching Netflix videos online, and playing games like L4D. I have to quit what i am doing and then wait for some time as the comp goes back to normal. Also most of the time I have firefox running in the background with 1-2 tabs and i have heard firefox causes some problems as well.

So i just cant figure out the reason for this bad slowdowns. It feels as if I have a pentium 2 and have accidently started 10 programs at once . Either its the wireless connection, or a cpu problem or firefox.

Please help me sort this out.

Firefox slowdown / high CPU utilisation

I really like Firefox, especially version 3's excellent address bar, I really miss that in IE 7. Unfortunately both Firefox 2 and 3 seem to suffer from random high CPU utilisation. Not only does this slow down my system, but it has the annoying side effect that all system fans spin up.
I am able to reproduce this on several different operating systems and hardware platforms including a Vista, XP and Windows server 2003,windows 7

Yogi i think you are right. Overtime i find that firefox keeps using more memory even when i havent open any other tabs. But I think I found the solution to my problem. And it was Windows Defender. Since the install of 7 it was on default settings and was constantly on but now i have turned it off completely and everything seems allright.

I found this when I saw scvhost.exe using a lot of CPU usage and when I selected go to service it selected Windefend.

Windows 7 Slow Browsing

Hello There...
My Thinkpad T40 Laptop - CPU 1.5, 2GB RAM, Windows 7 Build 7048.

The first week of browsing and booting was great. After loading quite a number of applications, the slow-down occurred. Even Firefox ran much slower. A few unnecessary services were stopped, but no real speed improvement.

Then I checked my user profile. It had grown to 1GB! I immediately moved all my downloaded files from the c:\user\"name"\downloads folder directly to a "new" C:\download folder. I also moved other saved docs and music directly to "new" folders on the root c: Now my profile is just around 100MB. (This is cool if you are the only PC user. But, you could apply security on these folders on a shared PC). Booting and browsing is speedy again!

hmm. Ive never noticed a drop of random slowdown.
I only use Foxfire.

Im very impressed with the stability.

But I will probably go back to XP still, untill windows7 matures enough.

within 48 hours of installing win7, ive already come across 2 drivers that are not available for win7 yet.

one of them being the (non 360) xbox controller driver.
which is a microsoft USB controller even. lmfao.

no one can get it to work. untill they write a complete new driver.

turning off Windows Defender seemed to solve the slowdown problems for me
and manually setting LAN speed instead of auto-negotiate seemed to help out internet browsing as well.
