RC vs. Beta

I really liked the beta, I had no problems with anything there, it was just the perfect OS, well, compared to Vista. I did not really do a quite clean RC install, I did inplace and let it overwrite the partition that had 7 beta, so I got a windows.old folder that was useful and then hell to get rid of.

Now with the RC I am seeing changes I don't like:

I open any folder and there is a big "Unspecified" heading in detail view which annoys me, it seems to correspond to libraries, and I have no intention of assigning anything to a library and don't need a library, is this something I turn off maybe in Windows search?

Homegroup seems more intrusive now, popping up where I least expect it, I was able to ignore it completely and not have it bother me in the beta. I was still able in both RC and beta to set up networking the old fashioned way, but it seems that Windows bugs me more about homegroup in RC.

I installed a screensaver that worked perfectly in beta, but in RC I got a missing directx dll message. I had to go find the dll online and dump it in system32 to get the screensaver to work. So directx in RC is not quite finished.

I was not able to play Quakelive in Firefox in the beta, it was a slideshow and the mouse would not respond, but it all runs great in RC, once you run Firefox in admin mode and get past windows firewall that freezes up mouse and keyboard ( long story ) and reinstall flash player ( no reason, but there it is ) so I will need to find a firewall that works. Avira free av works fine, btw.

There are other minor annoyances that I find daily, but 7 RC, if it is an indication of things to come, will be imho just as crappy as Vista when it is final and I hope I am not the only one who preferred the beta so MS will adjust and adapt accordingly - problem is I am not official beta tester, just part of the public test, so my voice won't be heard except here  ... anyone else have weird discrepancies, annoyances, etc..?

I didn't force an upgrade, just overwrote the existing install, do you really think a "proper" clean install is going to fix the differences I noted, most of which seem to be revisions to RC from the previous beta? In beta, I had directx 10, in RC, its 11, which for some reason didn't include dlls for compatibility with lower dx versions. I can do a proper clean install thru bootdisk but I can't see how it would affect what I noticed, can you explain a bit before I go thru that again, which I may do anyway since I still want to test drivers I didn't install yet.

Your always better off doing a clean install. What you got to remember is this is still an os in the making. There has been many problems reported on this forum by people who have upgraded but not by others who have clean installed. As for dx10-11 your computer will be running as dx 10 because no hardware or software is dx11 compatible yet. The compatibility of lower dx's you say was what caused the problem but this is very very unlikely as they are one and the same. I suggest your problems stem from the fact you upgraded.

What gpu chip do you have?

Hi, I didn't do an upgrade. I chose custom and the partition on which the beta was previously installed. It still saved the existing beta install in a windows.old directory.

The graphics card is ATI Mobility Radeon 2600 HD, for which I installed the Windows 7 drivers from ATI's site.

OK, formatted and reinstalled as directed! Directx missing dll error still there. I compared the system dirs between Vista and 7 and 7 is definitely missing a lot of dlls, I can just dump the missing dll in the system dir as I did before, but this is still very strange, as I had no such problems with the beta.

I agree. I did a Windows Vista Business upgrade to Windows 7 Beta and it was all screwed up.

Gem, Dx dll do not come as standard on any of windows operating systems. They have to be downloaded seperately. It is NOT an error. This is the way it is meant to be. Just go here for the installer and as long as your system is legitimate you will have no problems.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en

Just click on continue and you will be off. Depending on which variety (x86 or x64) your running will depend on the size of the download. X64 is bigger with around 65-70 mb.

Here it is. Click this and your done.

Happy days!:D

I have only done 1 upgrade installation that hasn't been "borked". That was upgrading from Vista SP1 to the Win7 beta.

The difference was that the Vista SP1 install was a fresh install with nothing else installed on it. All others that I've tried (XP, Vista, and Win7) have been on OS's that were used regularly - and I suspect that all the changes that I made were to blame for it.

Why anybody would want anything other than a clean installation of an operating system is beyond me. Besides the fact it will be running sweet I like doing clean installations of windows 7. It's not like xp which seems to take forever to install.
