RC1 Install hangs at "Starting Windows"

Hi,

I had Win 7 Beta installed in its' own partition for a few months. I re-formatted the partition to install RC1. I have tried installing from within winXP and on a re-boot, but the result is the same: When the machine gets to the "Starting Windows" first screen, before the logo appears, the installation stops, no more DVD activity, no HD activity I can detect. My machine: ASUS A8n-SLI, 4GB RAM, XFX 9800GT Video. I have unplugged all the USB peripherals and one of my two displays, but still the same result.
Where do I go from here?
Thanks!
JS

Solved

I found that Windows 7 definately doesn't like more than 2 gigs of RAM, on install. I took out 2, the install went fine, and then put them back.
I hope MS fixes this before the real thing comes out.

I am also getting a hanging "Starting Windows" screen. What makes this even worse is that I try to to the roll back option and it reboots. So I am lost as what to do next. I have seen nvidia video adapters don't like Windows 7 and that is what is in my laptop. I would go back to Vista if I knew how. Is there a way to delete the setup files and fix the boot loader to restore vista? The only option I see is to get a new hard drive and put my old drive in an external enclosure to pull the data off of it.

Anyone ever get a resolution to this? I'm about to try pulling some ram out of desperation.

Datter-- Im coming to this late but you should check the bios for legacy floppy support, Max ram, max cpu (all should be unchecked). Plus check the HD settings.

Also info on your install image, where you got it how you made it (at what speed) etc would be helpful

I've disabled my (non existant) floppy drive in the bios... and no sign of Max ram or max cpu in my BIOS.

RTM I'm using is 7600.16385.090713-1255_x64fre_client_en-us_Retail_Ultimate-GRMCULXFRER_EN_DVD.iso it hash checked against the source ok.

It was burned at 4x and seems to read ok.

Updates going here, but pulling 2GB of my 6GB seems to have got me past the hang point. It's now sitting at "Expanding Windows Files (0%)" in the UI... I'm hoping it's actually doing something.

Happy to report, it's installed and running very nicely. Something about Win7 did NOT like that extra 2GB in my system for some reason. I'm running 4GB now and it seems ok. I did have some mixed RAM (a 4GB kit, plus my old 2gb)... maybe something wasn't quite right since they weren't matched?

When your are installed do yourself a favor and rum memtest on your ram. Mixed ram cuases all sorts of random glitches if not matched well.

Glad I could be of help and let me know if something goes wrong

Yep, there you have the problem.
Best is to go with identical ram modules.

6gb in itself is not a problem.

Running one machine with 8gb and one with 32gb here.

My experience in installing Windows 7, has shown no problems on 32-bit editions with 2GB or 4GB of RAM. And I've had no problems installing 64-bit on 2GB, 4GB or 8GB of RAM.

I did have a slow load of both Vista and Windows 7 on 1 machine until I disabled the floppy drive in the BIOS...since I didn't actually have on. As soon as I made that change, my OS loaded in about 10-15 minutes. Prior to that change, it probably sat at "Starting Windows" for nearly 10 minutes.

well, to be honest, the red ones on the right and left have gone to my friends, two days ago.
but luckily they stayed together.

We kept the black girl and the little guy on his back.

And wouldn't trade them for anything, especially not a lapbrick with 1gig. :D lol

Sorry, I'll go back on topic.

I think you mean you went from 10 minutes to 10-15 seconds, I hope for you?:D

That is a fast boot.

Mine takes longer, but the more ram you have the longer it takes for windows to allocate them.

PS. I usually don't boot much though. Always on standby.
