RDC why doesn't it save updated information?

I am using Windows 7 and many times I change settings in saved remote desktop connections and they will not update. For instance I change the connection ip address and save as and overwrite the profile. I go back and edit and the old ip is there. Such a simple task and yet windows cannot save the information. Anyone have this problem?

Thanks,

Gibs

GibsonGK55, Welcome to the windows 7 forum.

You might want to see if you can create a shortcut for the Remote Desktop program and then make the mods to it and then use
the save as option to another name so that the next time you click on that shortcut, it should be as you changed it.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the reply. The problem is that when you make changes to profile and click save or click save as and overwrite the profile file it still does not save the updated information. Must be another flaw in microsoft. So in other words I would have to create a new connection with RDC and save a new profile everytime there is a change for example username or password for the connection. Absolutely absurd.

GibsonGK55, your problem seems strange, I open the RDP and make the necessary changes and then save it as a new name like the site I am going to and I end up with a new rdp session that retains what I changed. Can I assume that your running the rdp as administrator? and saving it to your desktop or some other directory?

It would be even more absurd to expect Windows to remember a User name and password that it's never connected to before when using Remote Desktop.

RDC

Hi Rich,

Yes I am running it as the administrator. I am the only user (administrator).

Also if I uncheck the always ask for credentials the username reverts back to the previous name or the original name when it was first saved under another profile name.

And to answer Chev with his condescending reply, windows has connected to the rdc and marked save and it cannot remember anything. So do everyone a favor and don't reply if you cannot be courteous and helpful. Thank you in advance.

A belated welcome to the Seven Forums.

This is the version of RDC that I have to work with.
I've not installed the latest version from W8.

An RDC shortcut (profile?) is just a text file. Drag/drop it into notepad and see if the stuff that you thought should change - did change. Or change it via notepad. The password is kept in the Windows credential manager... so obviously, it won't be in the text file :-)

Starting with a connection that has been made once (where the username and password was saved), you should see something like this:

RDC-2.png

As soon as you change the computer name, the info under the username changes:

RDC-3.png

But you can save everything except the password to the text file (shortcut/profile) without connecting.

For computers that you have connected to in the past, you can edit the password and it should save WITHOUT having to connect to the computer. I have so many of these RDC shortcuts that I have a script to change all of the passwords. I might not even connect to one of the computers before I have to change the password again... but they are all ready for me to use via a double click without having to dig up the password.

Let us know if your computer does not act as I have described.

Here is some info if you want to post screenshots:

Thanks for the detailed information and pictures. I took one saved profile and dropped it into notepad as you suggested. The original profile created was user3 and saved as user4. Now if I uncheck the box "always ask for credentials" it reverts back to user3 and stays this way. I drop the same profile into notepad and it shows as user3 under the username (last line).

I right click on the shortcut and click on edit and it shows user4. The problem with leaving the box checked is that I have to enter the password every time. I don't understand why it reverts to another user.

Thanks again

I see that too. I've never run into this before because I do not try to use two accounts (USER3 and USER4) for one remote computer (VM1). The username comes from the text file or credential manager. It appears that you can only store one set of RDC (TS) credentials per computer ID*.

You can ID the computer by...
...name
...FQDN
...IP
So, you can store 2 or 3 sets of credentials.

Someone on the Microsoft forums wrote that you can't save the signon if you use IP's.
not correct. I use the IP for a site that uses a SSL gateway.
Works for me..

I'm glad that link was useful and it seemed to be about the same problem with remote desktop not saving all previous credentials.

I'm not too sure about saving with IP's or not but apparently hitting the save button before connecting should save the credentials to an RDP file which works to fix the problem.

The last page of that link shows people saying it worked but I haven't taken the time to test this out myself.

Looking at Rich's screen shot in post# 12 I see that you can edit or delete credentials. I don't know RDC or use it, so

If I understand this issue:
The issue manifests when RDC was setup by one user and that user is no longer on the system.
You, the only user on the system now (admin), are trying to use RDC, but the old user creds are stuck in the RDC configuration.

I'm wondering if the solution is as simple as maually configuring creds if or simply delete the creds and try again with your user.

As I mentioned, I don't know RDC - but I do catch some things.

I'll bow out 'cause that's all I have to offer.

Good luck,

Bill

Try the following:

Save a profile named user1 that lets you connect to computer A using saved credentials for user1.

Save a profile named user2 that lets you connect to computer A using saved credentials for user2.

Save a profile named user3 that lets you connect to computer A using saved credentials for user3.

Save a profile named user4 that lets you connect to computer A using saved credentials for user4.

You should be able to double click on the saved profile (text file) named user1 and connect to computer A using the saved credentials for user1.

You should be able to double click on the saved profile (text file) named user2 and connect to computer A using the saved credentials for user2.

You should be able to double click on the saved profile (text file) named user3 and connect to computer A using the saved credentials for user3.

You should be able to double click on the saved profile (text file) named user4 and connect to computer A using the saved credentials for user4.

If you figure out how to do that, then you have solved the OP's problem.
