Is there a way to change the way win7 sorts numeric sequenced directory's in the navigation tree?


Win7 sorts The way I would like it sorted
this way 1
1 2
10 3
11 4
12 5
13 6
14 7
15 8
16 9
17 10
18 11
19 and so on
20
2
20
21
and so on

I tried to lay out the demo in 2 columns but it didn't work out.

Not sure I understand what you are trying to represent. Is it this:

and what you want is

If so, that's called the natural sort order. In XP you could control this, not so much since Vista, Win 7, Win 8, ...

Unless a program has its own needs for the arrangement and if only for storage of files I 'pad' the numerical name with one or more 0's such as 001, 0111, etc., use enough to make all the names the same length. If wanting a particular Folder [or file] to show first I put a tilde ~ at the beginning of the name, sometimes two tildes, helps in getting the most used at the top of the list.

I also:

• Pad my numbers with as many zeros as required
• Use () to force the display order

Unfortunately Linux distro file managers sort differently to Windows Explorer, so () don't always work as expected.

Agreed with Berton and Lehnerus, I do add leading 0's as well, depending on how large the number will get.

That's one of the reasons I love the FreeCommander Mass Rename tool.
I mostly use it for renaming picture and music files.
