Re-enable Autorun

I recently underwent some issues with a virus, and after getting my computer back up, my autorun seems to have been disabled. I can't figure out what is wrong...
Everything seems to be working fine, except the autorun files i wrote for all of my 200dvds, hard drives, flash drives, etc. are all being completely ignored. Can anyone help?

Some anti-malware tools disable autorun. It is a common means of infection.

Unfortunately, I don't have gpedit, as I am running home premium... I realize the risk of having autorun enabled, but I still want it.

click Start
in the search window type "autoplay"
select "Autoplay" and a window should open that has the option to enable autoplay on all devices or on individual devices.

I have already checked, and both NoDriveAutoRun and NoDriveTypeAutoRun values are as they should be... but autorun still refuses to work.

If the registry values are set to enable autorun, then try this

go to the AutoPlay interface and set Software and Games to "Install or run program from your media"

No, still not working. I have also temporarily removed all virus protection, so that doesn't seem to be causing it...

just click the start menu button, and hit all programs. if you haven't changed some of the default programs that are pinned to the all programs menu, above installations, then default programs is there. you can adjust autoplay settings from within that snap-in.

if you've changed your default pinned programs and adds on the all programs menu then get to the run box by either hitting window key+R or getting into the Start Menu & Taskbar properties by context menu clicking and going under properties. Then you hit the Start Menu tab, and click the Customize button and select the option to show the run dialogue box or control panel in the start menu.

The point is, you need to get to control panel if default programs isn't pinned on your start menu. so either get to the run dialogue as described the two ways (showing it on the start menu via properties or windows key+R) and type 'control panel' or click control panel on the start menu (and you can have it show there near your user folder, homegroup, devices/printers and all that, by entering properties the same as for showing the run dialogue box or connect to menu, except find control panel and poke a dot at either show on the menu, show as a link, or don't show).

Once you get into control panel, go to HArdware & Sound, and then autoplay options. I have some psr steps too, but i don't have a webpage to post from so this dragged out bit will help I hope.

Unfortunately, that also gets me to the autoplay, which is working. My problem seems to be that the autorun.inf files are not being read.

Couple more things to try just for the heck of it. Try running System File Checker from an elevated command prompt (option two this tutorial):

If any damaged/corrupt system files are found run SFC three times. If no damaged/corrupt system files are found, try a Repair Install. Your user accounts, data, programs, and system drivers should not be affected.

If you decided to change things in the registry, make sure you create a system restore point or export a copy of the existing registry to a convenient location like the desktop just in case you need to revert back to it.

Unfortunately, I left my install disc at home, and am currently living in a college dorm room, 6 hours away... it might take a while to get a hold of a disc, so are there any other suggestions while I'm looking?

I think that link points the way to go.

First back up the registry keys.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Right click on the NoDriveTypeAutoRun entry in the right pane and Delete

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Double-click on NoDriveTypeAutoRun entry in the right pane and enter 91 Then click OK

At least then you'll have the default registry settings that usually allow you to set up autorun.
