Re flashing the BIOS

Now I have an Asus P8Z77-V board and I have the latest BIOS version installed but I do have a very irritating problem in that the BIOS boot order keeps changing whenever I restart or even boot up after a lay off and I have got go in and change the boot order back to the hard drive.

I am wondering if I should re-flash the BIOS to try and correct this extremely annoying issue.


Any ideas please as it has been like this for some considerable time and if there is any other way of making the BIOS keep the settings I give it can anyone please advise because for obvious reasons I don't want to flash the BIOS if I can help it.

Hi ICIT2LOL,

Does your boot order revert to default setting? If so: Check your CMOS battery.

Thanks Snick mate I have a new battery in it as I changed that a few months ago - about five so unless it has drained (highly unlikely) I guess I am going to have to default the settings and if it fixes it well all well and good because I don't clock anymore except the RAM as I don't game much at all.

Greetings ICIT2LOL, does the boot order sequence change only after installing the latest BIOS version on your motherboard?

Then I would most certainly consider BIOS Flashback with a USB stick, and restore an earlier BIOS file.

If the battery is good, and if there is no hardware problem (e.g. a bad chip), then your only option would be to reflash the BIOS.

I have heard of cases where you cannot revert to an older version of the BIOS. Make sure you can on your computer before attempting it.

Just be aware that the USB stick you use is FAT32 formatted.

This is a very important product, and thank you for the information.

If I were a BIOS developer, I would ALWAYS make a way to either reflash the BIOS with an older version, or simply undo the flash that caused the problem. It is unconscionable that some BIOS upgrades are irreversible.

Thanks Jim and Iko sorry for the late reply and to answer the questions the BIOS change each time I power up or reboot and requires me going in and resetting the hard drive as the first boot device it just will no stick.

The BIOS has this setting on the front end and in Advanced mode but it doesn't matter ho many times you do it it reverts back to the optical drive as first boot device. I just wished it has a dual BIOS chip/s in case anything went wrong and I am not so sure about whether or not going back a version is going to make much difference I just thought rattling the box would reorganize the darn thing.

I cannot get that video to open up I might have to look at it on another machine anyway lets hope it has something I can use before I go nuts(ier).

Does your system time change as well on reboot? If you have a test meter you could check the voltage. I've experienced defective batteries right out of a freshly purchased pack! Doesn't happen very often, I think only twice in my case that I can recall, but it's a simple check. Chance of the second battery being bad is about as likely as me winning the lottery.

Ok mate I will check the battery voltage and it could possibly be a rogue even though it is a good brand .

The time my friend no to is static I just think the chip is not right in the head if you get my drift.

It really is more of an annoyance than a problem being that booting from the hard drive is about 22 secs whereas if it has to check the optical first it is over 30 secs.

I posted this thread really to see if anyone else had tried flashing the BIOS for a similar problem but in view of the risks I didn't want to do it unless I had some sort of confirmation from someone.
