Solved Re moveable disks problem: all I get is please insert a disk

I am attempting to use a muti-card reader in order to examine some xd cards that have been misplaced. The reader has four drives listed under Disk drives in Device Manager as generics and in MY Computer as E,F,G,H. In Device Manager the drive for xd cards is listed last.

The card reader is attached to one of the two front usb ports via a male/female usb lead, as the reader's usb plug fouls the computer's casing.

The reader is connected ( light on) and xd card firmly inserted.

But no matter which drive letter I click on, the instruction is to insert a disk. Windows advises the device working correctly.

Hellllp, please!

Then maybe the card is bad. Or the reader is bad.

There is a option to not show empty drives in Win Explorer. Make sure that is checked then none of those card slots will show unless there is a working card inserted into the slot.

Can you explain what you mean when you say" the reader's USB plug fouls the Computer casing"?

I'm not at a computer right now so I can not post a link.....but I had this issue before....Look up "Computer will not read mass storage devices" its a thread I started, you might be able to fix the same way. Good Luck!

The reader has a short integral usb plug (no cable), Sockets for usb devices and some others like for cards ( not xd) are in a recessed section suitable for, say, a DVD drive. Without the addition of the male female lead the reader cannot be plugged in because either the top or bottom lip of the recessed section gets in the way. That's Dell for you!

During the evening, before I made my last post, I made sure that empty drives were marked to be hidden. Although so marked they still are visible in Device Manager

and Drives E,F,G,H in My Computer.

Somehow (??????) briefly the reader showed that the xd card had been allocated to G, and I used Minitool to recover the xd card's content. On next attempt the situation had reverted to its original state.

Now I am plugging in the reader to the usb port in the same way as in my OP. Result is as in the OP.

So now it's a look at jeepmanns suggestion.

I see that Jeep.. ended up in the BIOS and had to use a PS2 keyboard. I do not fancy the first and have not access to the second.

I have a 15gig pen drive that I inserted to the other front usb port it is recognised as a removable disk in K and goodness knows how, a drive I: CD Drive U3 system is showing. The pen drive appears also in Device Manger in the same manner as the card reader does in the image above,

I'm utterly confused!



Now the disk drive for xd in device manager has disappeared.16:30GMT

The trouble turned out as being related to the male usb plug not connecting firmly in the female of the extension.

Reminds me of an old national service saying about Brens:shock:
