I have had Windows 7 since October 25 2009. I have registered it and it is a valid, genuine copy of Windows 7. This morning, when I booted up, I got to my desktop and there was a window asking me to validate Windows. I click "Make Genuine" and it said that it was successful and I re-booted. When I re-booted everything was fine. I was just wondering what could have caused this. Any ideas?

Thank you,
Stephen Hobson

That's why ... Don't be surprised if you have to do this again every 90 days ...

In future, you might want to change your Windows Update to only notify you of updates, instead of automatically applying them.

If you had it set that way, you would have been notified about the update, come here with questions on it, and actually decided yourself whether or not to install it.

Thanks.

Ok. Sounds good. I was just scared that my product key stopped working. I do not know why that would happen but you never know. Anyway, thank you for your help. :)

It is not that it is hard to do; it is that a user with a valid copy of Windows Seven should NOT have to do it.

True, but again, every 3 MONTHS is hardly everyday, but the way some people go on about it you'd be forgiven for thinking it was, and even then not everyone is going to have issues like the OP has, who only required a restart to fix it.

Very true and maybe since he did it this time it won't happen again. But, still, it shouldn't happen at all to a user with a legitimate, validated system. I have not downloaded the update yet - and I'm in no hurry to do so.

Yes it is. I understand MS's point of view. But their piracy concerns and fight should not adversely affect their legitimate users. I could understand a once a year re-validation for all users; but I think every three months is overkill.

It may be only a one time thing.

Did you read any links provided to find out exactly what this was and what to expect in the future?

They have been fairly upfront in disclosing what the Update does, so they should tell you what this intrusion is about.

gregrocker:

Interesting points ... I checked the actual KB wording from the MS page and it says nothing about re-validating at any frequency.

So, maybe that was all FUD ... design to scare folks into thinking that MS would continually come back to haunt them, even after they've run the update?

of course it doesn't. we are talking about nosy microsour. guilty til proven innocent. just manually run windows update monthly and pick and choose which updates you actually want.
