I have had no luck installing 64 bit Windows,(see ACHI blocking installation in INSTALLATION AND SETUP) so reverting to 32 bit is less bother than continuing. The only new hardware that might have caused problems, the new ssd has been eliminated by a successful loading of Mint 17.1. During one of the aborted loads I got as far as activating the 64 bit. I still have the hdd with the original 32 bit W7 on it and will refit it as going to 64 bit when I have two other pc's with 64 bit is not vital. Will there be problems reactivating the 32 bit?

Shouldn't be - so long as the original Product Key is only installed on ONE machine.
If you have problems, post an MGADiag report.
