Is there any software program that can read a HDD in a caddy irrespective of the formatting of the files.

What I'm trying to read is a HDD out of a Humax 9200 PVR.

oops sorry I didn't understand the question at first.

I thought you were wanting windows to access it. which it will not do usually. windows only likes to see other windows installs

Welcome to Seven Forums wysiwyg49. What format are the videos in? You can try this VideoLAN - Official page for VLC media player, the Open Source video framework!
If this is a USB attached HDD, it may not work and you'd need an eSATA enclosure.

Not quite true, Windows 7 can read/write to a HDD with only files on it if it has FAT32 or NTFS format, maybe FAT16, but I've not tested this.

It is a SATA caddy, but being unable to read the HDD can't say what the format is,

Putting in a spare HDD it sees it and opens it.

So it can't be a windows type format.

Is it a USB caddy? Did you get any error like missing drivers?

Possibly you are locked out of it because of Digital Copyrights issues....

They have a Forum where you may find other ideas and info.

Is the caddy connected via USB or eSATA? Not the HDD interface.

The Drive could be of RAW format and therefore cannot be access by Windows.

I believe aem is going in the right direction here. From what I have read, the Humax drives aren't in FAT32, NTFS, or any other recognized format, but in it's own, proprietary format.

This is my recording studio PC. I also have a gaming rig, a HTPC, an old dual-core system I set up as a server, and a few old dinosaurs (the oldest is an Intel P-90) that I use for DOS and Win95 gaming when I feel nostalgic.
Well the caddy doesn't help, try using this.

Brando USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE Cable

It has to be picked up in device manager cos it's a usb device. If it has then go into Disk Management and see what it shows up as.

After a bit of searching it seems the recordings may be MPEG 2, so why doesn't Windows see it.?

The files can be in mpeg2, but as mentioned, if the drive format is something Windows can't read, there's nothing you can do about it. Search for what formatting the drives are, and then see if there's a driver available to read that format. You may end up booting a Linux LiveCD to access the drive...if Windows can't read it, but Linux can. You don't need to be worrying about the caddy or anything like that until you can verify the format of the drive.

This is the USB, I think you've put your finger on the problem, Deacon,
This is with one of my normal HDD's inserted.
With the Humax drive in it doesn't show the Auto play
