Real quick question.

All I want to know is how to disable this. I have the correct drivers on my desktop, but Windows 7 will not let me update it.

Seriously, that's ALL I want to know. I've looked quite a bit for the answer as I assumed it would be quite simple.

It's drivers for this Linksys wireless adapter.

There's incompability issues on Windows 7, having it show up on the device manager but not functioning at all.

I read on the actual Linksys site that I need special drivers for Windows 7. I have them, but am unable to install them because of this problem.

I actually DO need this because without automatic driver installation on, it won't appear in device manager, and without that, I can't update the driver since it's not there.

You should be able to install drivers without going through device manager, simply download the exe from the manufacturer and run it.

Hmm, the files I have in the driver folder have the following extensions: .cat, .inf, .sys, .dat, and .dll.

How do the instructions on the Linksys site tell you to install them?

If you can't find the instructions then I would just search for the files with the same names and swap them out manually.

I've searched around and I've found an iso. Is this an appropriate file type to install a driver with?

Here, try this. Enter msinfo32.exe into the start menu, and then go to File>Export, and save a copy on your desktop. Right-click>Send to>New Compressed Folder, and then attach it to your next post.

Sorry for the bump, but is there REALLY no way to disable this automatic driver thing? You really can't have Windows 7 let you install your own drivers? Jeez.

Yes, I have seen and done this.

The problem is, when I do this, the wireless adapter won't even show up in the device manager, thus not even giving me the option to find the drivers for it.

I just want it so Windows does not prevent you from installing a driver, even if Windows thinks it's already got the most up to date one installed.

Since you have listed your folder containing a .inf file you can try going to device manager>the device you want to install the driver for>update driver software>browse my computer>let me choose> have disk>select or point it to the .inf file>then click or double click the .inf file and see if it will install that way.
