Really bad cpu spikes in both Live 8 and FL Studio

Hi. I thought the problem was initially with Live but i'm having similar issues with FL Studio 8.5. Everything will be playing fine and then the cpu will max out for a few seconds. CPU is avg around 40-50%. I'm not playing or tweaking anything at the time to cause it. I read on here that ableton live 8 worked well on windows 7 but i can hardly use it. Now FL is exhibiting the same behaviour. :(

I'm probably going to switch back to vista till i get a new laptop but has anyone ideas that i can try before i have to switch?

System: Dell Inspiron 1525 c2d 1.6ghz, 3gb ram, 5,400sata hd, integrated graphics, Windows 7RC Ultimate.

It's not a soundcard issue as i've tried native, asio4all and system drivers. My machine is underpowered and i will be upgrading soon but i'd like to see if i can resolve this in the meantime or at least what's causing it. CPU use is fine when the spikes happen, it's not like i am pushing it particularly hard. I think things aren't quite there with windows 7 yet but i read on here that live was working on windows 7 so maybe it's a hardware issue.

Is there some software or an app that can help me identify what's happening at the time these spikes occur? Thanks

I just realised i haven't done system maintenance for a while so i'm going to run disk defrag etc and see if there is any improvement...

Its not the hardware. Im also running an inspiron (1405) and win 7 runs well. No hangs, no BSOD, no lags etc. Granted I dont game. I don however run cpu instensive apps that could max out the cpu.

Thanks i wasn't sure. I installed auslogics boostspeed and have been checking the processes and services that are running and the resources they are using. I can't identify anything but the cpu is jumping from 20% to 69% every few seconds. It moves up and down but then jumps suddenly, no idea why. It doesn't match the cpu use of Live. I have tried all the usual tricks such as disabling speedstepping and turning off various devices in device manager but to no avail.

My CPU temperature is running at at 89-92C which seems awfully high. Perhaps this is the cause of my problems?

Spikes also often occur in Live when i load 3rd party plugins so i don't know if there i some incompatibility between windows 7 and vst plugins as well.

Anyway i ran disk defrag but it made no difference. Perhaps my cpu fan needs a good clean.
