Thank you all for the explanations. I am now that little wiser. My Windows 7 was pre installed on a new PC and I have never got involved with Beta versions. In fact this is the first time I have used a new version of Windows so early in it's history. I normally wait for a year to let the bugs get sorted. I'm surprised that people are so open about installing what is clearly not a "paid for" version, I thought Microsoft had a system of checking the authenticity of their operating systems.
Anyway perhaps this is not the right place to be discussing this!

Yes especially as you were mixing up two different posters, mitchell65 was not the original poster who had installed Windows 7 Professional.
Thank you, most thoughtful. i did in fact create a disc as the first task after connecting up my new PC but have taken the opportunity of creating a second as backup. If I have two the chances of needing to use one will probably get less.Hello mitchell65.
