So much for problem solved........The problem came back again....Really gave up on trying to find a solution myself and I think it migth be a hard problem so I sent my vaio duo 13 to the sony service center today......will see what they come up with...

Then I looked around on forums again, and I read that others had the same problem with similar Gigabyte motherboards (I have a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5). Somebody suggested that it might be a conflict between the Gigabyte Marvel SATA drivers and the optical drive (DVD-rom). Basically, you shouldn't plug your DVD-rom into any of the Marvel (blue) SATA slots.

So I plugged it into a non-Marvel slot, and suddenly no spikes. WTF!!! I'm constanly running the DPC latency checker now, and when I look at it after hours of gaming, it usually tells me that there was a spike, but I didn't notice it at all. So it's weird, but seems to be working. Hope it helps.

That was the best tip ever for me. That bug was really driving me bonkers, for days I was trying a plethora of different drivers and BIOS settings, but nothing helped, still that annoying crackle.

Never would I've had the idea that it's my DVD burner at the Marvell controller which is causing the sound problem. I've disconnected it now from the Marvell controller and plugged it on the Intel SATA controller, et voila, perfect clear sound.

I've BTW a much newer Gigabyte board, the GA-Z87X-UD5H. Unbelieveable that it has still the same bug with the Marvell controller over all these years.

So I have this new rig, Gigabyte Sniper B5 with i5, 32GB RAM.

My audio setup is optical out from Realtek onboard optical out to Logitech Z906 5.1 systems.

The sound will suddenly pop for like a second then go back normal.

The problem is very likely to happen when playing games.

However, it's very unlikely to happen when I watch movie with Potplayer, no matter for normal PCM or AC3 or DTS.

I checked latency, it's under 500 most of the time. occasion around 800 for 1 spike, but I didnt see latency is the cause.

Any idea?

You should try the following. The Power plan set to high perfomance, as this will reduce DPC latency. DPC latency may be the cause of why it occurs crackling sound.
