example: I have 10 pdfs open and I want them in a certain order on my taskbar. Vista had programs like taskix or taskbar shuffle but they dont seem to work for windows 7. Is there any solution?

I can just drag and drop things on my taskbar to where I want them and they stay there. Does this work for you? Or do you mean a certain order when you open them back up again?

I can drag and drop everything but when I have multiple instances of the same application open, 3 Filezilla windows, I can not separate them nor can I rearrange their order. Is there any work-around for this?

I think you'd just turn grouping off in the taskbar properties. I forget how, but it should be simple to find with some quick exploring in the taskbar properties dialog.

My taskbar buttons option is set to 'Never combine'. The items are not actually grouped behind each other, rather they are locked side by side. So if I go to drag one window, all three will move. And there is no way to separate them or rearrange their order.

Sorry to resurrect this, but its better than starting a new one? Maybe.

Anyway, i have the same problem (or request i suppose), and i know exactly what he means.

The problem is that nothing is grouped, and thats great, you can see all the icons down there like you normally would, but the 'groups' are still there. All the firefox, all the PDFs, all the explorers and so on, this, as our friend above said, isn't what i want. I have taskbar shuffle, and it even specifically has an option to group or not (i have it 'not).

However, when i have PDFs, or firefox windows i usually want them in a specific order, because of how i'm reading them, or how they are displayed on my monitors, but you can't reorder things, you can move the various types of programs, ALL the firefox, ALL the PDF, but not individuals in that group.

You can take;
Firefox 1, Firefox 2, Firefox 3. Explorer 1, Explorer 2. PDF 1, PDF 2, PDF 3.

And change it to;
Explorer 1, Explorer 2. Firefox 1, Firefox 2, Firefox 3. PDF 1, PDF 2, PDF 3.

But you CAN'T seem to get;
Firefox 2, Firefox 1, Firefox 3. Explorer 1, Explorer 2. PDF 1, PDF 2, PDF 3.

And certainly not; (Which i don't actually mind about honestly)
Firefox 1, Explorer 1, Firefox 3. Explorer 1, Firefox 2. PDF 1, PDF 2, PDF 3.

It seems there is some hidden condition that windows 7 has that is demanding that not only are things grouped by program (though you can stop things 'stacking') things also have to be grouped in order. The only way to change that is to open things in a specific order that you wish to view them in and close them if you want others to be further to the left. Which i would very much like to do (and what taskbar shuffle always did for me)

I have exactly the same problem and it seems there is no solution.
Another great idea implemented poorly.
Grouping may be nice to avoid clutter but it involves extra clicks or mouse moves and is not 1-click-ergonomic (watch for RSI if using windows 7!)

Hello I found the answer to this problem here in sevenforums.com (cant remember now what subforum exactly) and the solution is very simple just like back in Windows XP when we needed to use the genial "Taskbar Shuffle" now we need to use a program called "7 Taskbar Tweaker" available for both 32 and 64 bits.

With this program active there is an option among others where you can disable the default grouping by program ids in the Taskbar and move from place the programs of the same application which I think is what OP wants to do.

On a side note after I downloaded and used this program for that same purpose I disabled it because I didnt find so needed that feature after all it looks like its not very problematic for me to have to move all the programs by id group however its good to have the alternative.

kokugo thanx for the hint.
The tweaker does exactly what I was looking for and it is just an exe without install.
As I do need the feature only occasionally I stored the exe in my utilities folder.
I also found that the taskbar rearrange feature still works even if I exit the tweaker.
Thus I suppose it is just a registry setting which does the trick.

7 Taskbar Tweaker has been updated a lot

I just found this forum thread today after having recently upgraded to W7. I used to be a big fan of Taskbar Shuffle on Vista, but ran into trouble with it being unusable on W7.

I just followed the link to "7 Taskbar Tweaker" and found that it is no longer just an executable that changes registry settings, but it's now a fully installed program (free), that actually tweaks quite a few settings. I only changed the ones that allow me to reorder my taksbar buttons, but there are other useful ones in there.

I don't know why this isn't a native option in W7, but then again, I never understood a lot of what Microsoft does. For example... why when you do the "show windows side by side" command, does Windows always put them on the opposite side of the screen than their corresponding taskbar buttons? There are some things I guess we'll just never know.

Anyhow, the point is just that "7 Taskbar Tweaker" does what you're looking for if what you're looking for is what this thread is about. Love it!
